So, is Mr. Abbott conservative or liberal? By US standard, of course.

Well, is he winning, or losing???

It says he's "liberal" and liberal and conservative mean different things to different countries and even our country in different times. Is he just another gun-grabbing bossy, tyrannical "liberal" like those here, or what???

What were they chanting “Shame, shame” about?

For Australia, Tony Abbott winning is like Stephen Harper winning in Canada.
It’s a good thing.

Still doesn’t tell me anything ... only a good thing for whom? In USA speak, is he conservative or liberal? Give me a break, I am neither Australian or Canadian.

Could be anything - - think of your typical, mooching, low-IQ liberal Democrat protester here in America and you get the idea. Abbot is a "global warming denier" for one thing. Or maybe he wants to scale back on welfare.

Shame that a Conservative even dares to breathe.

Sorry, noob. Harper is what Americans would call a “conservative”. So is Abbott.

Not sure what “noob” is, but thanks for the clarification.

Sorry - I meant to add a post explaining this but got distracted by a screaming grandchild. Tony Abbott is a conservative - the Liberal Party is Australia’s major conservative party and he’s from the more conservative side of the party - so a genuine conservative.

Well, is he winning, or losing???

Current opinion polls say he'll be Prime Minister by sometime early next week (he doesn't take office until the Governor General swears him in, and that is normally a few days after the election).

And he's a staunch conservative - in Australia, the name 'Liberal Party' was chosen based on its classical definition invoking freedom and liberty, not the one it's evolved to have in more recent times. Like any politician, he's not perfect, but the conservative writing this thinks he's the closest we've had in my lifetime - John Howard, being pushed into a close second.

What were they chanting “Shame, shame” about?

It's left wing voters objecting to the fact that he wants to crack down on illegal immigration. Other chants heard were "Refugees are welcome, Abbott is not."

It's happened in a strongly left-wing (Labor) electorate. The opinion polls are looking so good for us that Abbott is spending today trying to get votes in traditional Labor seats in the hope of stealing away voters Labor takes for granted.

Thank you for the explanation.

He sounds like a good man, better than anything we’ve had to choose from in a long time.

Canada's Harper is considered a screaming liberal on social issues by any American social conservative such as myself. He is the one, for example, who said there would be no challenge to abortion rights during his tenure. Same with gay 'marriage': "Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper says his government has "no intention" of reopening the national debate on same-sex marriage." And yes, the leftists in Canada are even left of Harper.

Abbott is to the right of Harper on social issues. He's a devout Roman Catholic who is pro-life and pro-traditional marriage. The leftist talking point against him is this guy will "force his religious views on us"

I am looking forward to the count tonight. I am interested in your take on how the Senate will go - I have spoken to lots of people who have voted below the line for the Senate - I think that means we are going to have more minor parties or independents to deal with!

Yes, the Senate is going to be interesting - and it does look like a lot of below the line voting has occurred this year, partly because of websites that make it easier.

I’m hoping the Coalition comes out with 36 Senators - more would be nice - and with minor parties on the right (KAP, PUP, and Xenophon as well) get us a Senate that’s easy to work with.
