As the first woman to graduate from The Citadel, Nancy Mace says she knows what it is like to be on the outside looking in. She was frequently ostracized by the males at the school.
Mace, 35, would go on to graduate magna cum laude in three years and has since opened up a consulting business: The Mace Group.
“I learned two things in that process as a woman in that environment: You could bend over backwards bending your value system, your principles and your beliefs, and change who you are as a person,” she said. “Or you could do what I did and, I earned very few friends, but I stayed true to who I was. I did not change my values, or my beliefs or my principles. I was still successful.”
Mace acknowledged the race is an “uphill battle.”
She said the Republican Party can follow the path of growing government, “or we can take another path -- the path of free market, the path of limited government, the path of the Constitution and our founding principles.”
She said Graham is an “establishment” Republican.
“I see conservative Republicans stand up for the Constitution, who are standing up for border security, who are against amnesty, who are standing up to defund Obamacare, who are standing against reckless spending, who are standing against tax increases on the backs of individual taxpayers and small business,” she said.
“Almost always we can find our senior senator on the other side. It is time to change the direction of Washington. It is time to change the direction of our party and to change the direction of our country,” she said.
Mace said she does not believe the U.S. should get involved in Syria.
“I don’t think we have any good choices,” she said.

As a conservative, I have nothing but contempt for those who led the charge to introduce women into our military academies — disguising their leftist-based social-engineering with such terms as “equal rights.”
While Mace, as an undergraduate, was nothing more than a pawn in the game, I do not view her entry into the Citadel as a proud moment in the history of either that once-great military institution or in the history of this country.
Questions to ponder: Do the Russians, Chinese, Arabs, or Iranians (our most likely opponents in any future wars) have women training along side men in their military institutions? Somehow I doubt it. I wonder why? Maybe, just maybe, because they are more concerned about winning in battle than in pleasing the talking heads on MSNBC, et al.
Now, I would not hold the fact that Mace went to the Citadel against her, per se, as we all do dumb things in our youth.
However, now that she is somehow trying to run as a “conservative,” while trading on her ‘martyrdom’ as a female Citadel co-ed telegraphs to me that she will not be any better than Lindsey Graham in the long run. Sounds like a female Lamar Alexander in the making to me.
South Carolina can do better, in my view.
The argument you present is the gung ho males-only argument which the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OVERRULED AND HAS PREVIOUSLY MANDATED FEMALES ARE ALLOWED AT VMI AND THE CITADEL...WHETHER SOUTH CAROLINA OR VIRGINIA VOTERS LIKE IT OR NOT. Take your disapproval to the Federal level, Tex-un.
I wonder if you have confused Nancy Mace with Shannon Faulkner who washed out her first semester. It sounds like you do.
As for your argument that she is not a conservative but a liberal in hiding: I believe Mace and not you.
The primary June 10th is for a Republican nominee for Senator Graham’s seat, not whether we like women attending The Citadel or not.
You are doing good work for the effort to re-elect Lindsey Graham by campaigning against ANY of his challengers at this early stage. BTW, which challenger will you be voting for?
My only reluctance is her association with the effort to smear Nikki Haley. The other two guys Cash and Bright appear solid. I’ll support whoever comes on top against Graham and keeps him under 50%.

Just because the Feds said that these institutions had to admit women does not mean that any women had to apply/attend.
No: I am not mixing up Mace with Shannon Faulkner. I realize that Mace graduated.
Of course, you may believe whom you wish: I am conservative (whether you believe that to be so or not). We shall see about Mace’s devotion to conservative principles should she win a Senate seat. (For now, color me highly skeptical.)
Your suggestion that by stating my views I am helping Graham to retain his seat is illogical, in that — as you point out — there are three candidates opposing him. Are you trying to quash the honest exchange of ideas, perhaps? (What are primaries for, if not debate?) The time to ask questions is now — not after someone has been elected. (Think: Obama.)
You asked for whom I plan to vote. Since I live in Texas, I plan to vote for a Tea Party opponent to John Cornyn when he is up again for re-election (if he even runs for re-election).
Were I a South Carolinian, however, I believe I would vote for Mr Bright, as the libs seem to hate him with a passion.
Again, I am extremely put off by any hint of Ms Mace’s trading on her ‘hardships’ as a Citadel cadet. No one forced her to apply or attend that formerly all-male institution. What did she expect? Male cadets to be thrilled with her presence? It appears she may simply be playing the ‘victim’ card in this regard. As Rush Limbaugh points out time and again, this is not the American way, and hardly the mark of a conservative.
If it is proven that Ms Mace is indeed a rock-ribbed conservative, then I will be delighted to learn that I have been wrong in my concerns.
In the meantime, South Carolina can do better than Ms Mace, in my view.

Like I said: I voted for Bright in his current office (he serves my district) and would heartily vote for him in a run-off against L. Graham.
But there are very real and not imaginary reasons why Graham wants to face Bright and not Mace or Cash. What more can I say without saying what I’d rather not say?

In the meantime, I will feel completely free to comment on any race I please — including the SC race. :-)
