Man, does this sound like SEIU. They have been trying to get in to the captive Airports cash flow for long time now.
This is about the Airport Businesses, and forcing them to pay more. Alaska Airlines is HQ’d in the City, and has outsourced a lot of the service functions, as well as the hotels, the Car Rentals, the Cargo Handlers, etc.
They can’t move, and most are non-union.
The business I work for (an airport transportation company) will be directly affected. Even though our company HQ is not in SeaTac, because most of our business is done at the airport, ALL of our drivers and our airport people are considered to be working in SeaTac. Therefore, the $15 an hour wage will be theirs as well. We have over 150 drivers. We're facing the prospect (if this gets passed) of either raising our rates to insane levels to cover payroll, cutting our staff and affecting available service, or the company president just saying “The Hell with it!” and closing up shop. I am not a driver, but I work in the office at HQ. I may lose my job if this gets passed. As a married man with 4 kids and 50 years of age, I'd be screwed beyond belief. No prospects of a job for someone my age.
I hope to God the people up in SeaTac wise up. Their potential idiocy could spell disaster for many...including me.

First, the businesses at the fringes of the city will fail when customers can simply walk across the street or drive an extra block to avoid the inflated prices that’ll come with the inflated wages. Then the ripple effect will effectively cause a donut of business death to grow block by block until the negative ramifications of an artificially-high minimum wage are clear for even the most clueless leftist to see.
Business owners just outside the city limits have a built-in advertising bonanza with “Our burgers cost less than the Sea-Tac burgers and taste as good, maybe better. Come give us a try.” or pizza or chicken joints or any other biz that typically pays low wages.
High school grads that could, read and write, do basic math, weren't stoned all the time, came to work on time, and understood and spoke English.
Just requiring a High School diploma would put a serious road block on their affirmative action agendas.
The freaks covered with piercings and tattoos would be gone instantly along with the felons.
This will at least give time for businesses to relocate out of the area.
Great....except what about the businesses that CAN’T relocate? The one I work for has been around for over 25 years and this might just kill it.
Beat me to it. They're only making a loaf of bread cost $10 and poo-poo on everyone's savings. When will people understand that every min. wage increase puts them more behind?
Sadly, I think Obamacare is also going to kill off a LOT of businesses.

And what other edicts can the populace place upon business in which it has no obligations? Company car? Health insurance? Paid time-off?

Since when are wages paid by private companies subject to community vote? Or, even municipal council action?
That’s the beauty of federalism and why we don’t want a national government. Let the Commerce Clause use its magic to straighten things out.
I wish conservative legislators and our next conservative President would use the CC to club the states into submission on all their abusive, anti-commerce laws.
