Syria: If Bashar al-Assad hands over chemical weapons we will not attack, says John Kerry
The Telegraph ^ | 9/9/2013

Posted on 09/09/2013 4:00:30 AM PDT by markomalley

Mr Kerry was in London on Monday morning on the final leg of a whirlwind European tour to drum up support for intervention in Syria.

When asked by a reporter whether there was anything Assad's government could do or offer to stop an attack, Mr Kerry said: "Sure, he could turn over every single bit of his chemical weapons to the international community in the next week – turn it over, all of it without delay and allow the full and total accounting (of it).

"But he isn't about to do it and it can't be done." Mr Kerry repeated his belief, stated on numerous occasions, that "the risk of not acting is greater than the risk of acting."

Gawd these guys are amateurs.

0'Kerry are negotiating as Saddam did with the Bush team prior to the Iraq war. Saddam showed total ineptness, lack of timing, and lack of reality. Bush/Cheney/Powell/Rumsfeld/et-al played Saddam like a fiddle.

Now we have 0' and Kerry foundering in every step, with Assad/Putin/Britain and so on...

When did Kerry become our President??? Obama better watch out....Kerry is an UBER USUPER!

I'm glad to know they are drawing more lines in the sand and bypassing Congress, both of which they said they wouldn't do.

JFK was probably a pretty good guy but he sure spawned fifty years of Massachusetts mistakes aided and abetted by the adoring US press. Just so I’m not flamed too much for calling him a pretty good guy, I did have the pleasure of voting against him.

A better proposal would be to negotiate a deal with the Russian. Make them responsible for securing all material and ensure that their friend Assad does not use them.

IMO Vlad Putin brokered this deal.

Give Assad a deadline. Russia will ensure that he hands over a quantity of something resembling chemical weapons. Obama declares victory and crawls back in off the ledge.

IMO this is what Putin approached him about at the G-20.
If it works Vlad will really have him by the shorthairs.

This sounds like an ultimatum—like war talk. OK what if he demands we remove all of our nukes? or if Putin demanded we dismantle our own poison gas? Kerry looks like he’s investing in war. maybe this will all blow over but I fear its going to blow up in our faces. Odds are maybe 20% to 80% it will end with WW III or a limited naval war (30%- 70%) Will NATO support us if Russian ships blow ours out of the water to defend Syria? Will we blow Russian ships out of the water at any threat? Scary times indeed. And we have a fool in the Oval Office.

then barry has to decide whether or not he has forfeited his War Powers Act “authority” to personally order a unilateral 60 day undeclared war over the top of the Russian Navy parked off the Med coast

what could possibly go wrong?

All you say is true except such considerations are beyond the capacity of Kerry answering the question of what can Assad do.

He is not quick enough on his feet to make those calculations.

Bashir Assad has no doubt learned from Gaddafi what happens when you give up your WMD.s.

Bush kept his deals, Obama can’t be trusted.
