And what weight will this have in the scheme of things?

Let’s say they create their own legislature/executive/capital/judicial system and refuse to pay taxes to Sacramento, what then?

If West Maryland, North Colorado and Jefferson are successful and they can get four more to join them, SHAZAM Obama will be correct.

57 STATES.

Is there a secession movement in western Maryland?

I went to college at Frostburg years ago. I know that people there thought they were very disconnected from the rest of Maryland. But didn’t know anybody wanted to see Allegany and Garrett Counties leave Maryland.

“Let’s say they create their own legislature/executive/capital/judicial system and refuse to pay taxes to Sacramento, what then?”

They create the Army of Northern California to defend their rights...

And then maybe we do a replay of 1861-1865, on a smaller scale.

And maybe this time, with the Union Army of California, under incompetent Hollywood command, the Union side loses...

Maybe Florida could go next. Split off Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties (solid blue) as South Florida and the rest of the state would be safely red forever.

RE: They create the Army of Northern California to defend their rights...

I wonder if the California National Guard will object to invading the state of Northern California...

And I wonder even more if Jerry Brown will have the cojones to invade.

And one even more complicated scenario — how will this play out at the FEDERAL level?

How can they apply to be the 51st state with their own 2 Senators and Congressmen? Will we now have 102 senators in DC?

And what are the RAMIFICATIONS for the United States were they to succeed?

There is a budding secessionist movement in Colorado and Texas as well...

Heck even Long Island in NY state has an incipient secession movement going on...

Would that the reverse were possible and states could expel the distasteful counties to their own fate. Texas comes to mind. (Of course, we'd have to then relocate our capital to a less San Fransicko-like place than Austin.)

Um, he thought there were 58. "We've been to 57 States and have 1 more to go to."

There's always a province from Canada that may secede. Quebec.

every tinpot mayor or county commissioner will start to have fantasies of being their own governor or senator.

The key is not leave the USA just California.

Sick of Conservatives doing this. It is cowardly. It is cut and run. It is the antithesis of Conservatism.

Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon join together to form a more realistic representation of their conservative population.

Exactly why it will never happen in Congress. Keeping newer States large in area compared to the Northeast was part of the grand compromise from the time the Constitution was drafted.

Modoc County voted yesterday 4-0 to join Siskiyou in the creation of a new state. I understand that it is on Butte County’s agenda next.
