GOP bill would ban using food stamp funds on junk food

Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., has proposed a bill to ban using food stamp funds on junk food. (AP)

Newly proposed legislation in Congress would ban recipients of food stamps from buying junk food.

The Hill reports that a bill proposed by Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., would require food stamp recipients to purchase only healthy food.

The Healthy Food Choices Act, H.R. 3073 is the latest salvo from Republican members of Congress who have criticized the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps or the Women, Infants and Children program (WIC).

In August, it was reported that House Republicans hoped to cut some $40 billion from future SNAP budgets.

Roe’s legislation is specifically in response to a 2012 study, which showed that recipients from the food stamp fund spend approximately $2 billion a year on junk food.

“As a physician, I realize the importance of healthy eating, and as an obstetrician, I’ve seen how the WIC program helps empower families receiving assistance to use taxpayer dollars to purchase healthy, wholesome foods,” Roe said in a statement published on his congressional site. “If these guidelines are good and healthy enough for women and children, then SNAP recipients should also benefit from adhering to the same standards.”

In June, Roe voted in favor of proposed legislation that would apply work to welfare standards to food stamp fund recipients.

Critics of Roe’s proposal say that the tighter nutritional requirements would actually be more of a burden for low-income individuals and families who rely on SNAP funds. They also point out that Roe previously opposed efforts by first lady Michelle Obama to improve national school lunch nutritional standards.

The GOP needs to get out of the ban-our-way-to-Utopia business that the lefties are already pursuing.

How bout pole dancers and lap dances, this is not uncommon use of food stamp cards in some licals. The junk food thing reeks of bloomberg. It is a weenie solution to a serious problem.

You can buy cigarettes, booze and prostitutes with food stamps, so why not junk food?

How about a bill declaring the democrat party as a seditious organization, followed by arrests and hangings for treason.

I would love to know how this myth originated........because it is just not true. At least about the cigs and booze - maybe the prostitute would accept the card in place of cash, but I doubt it.

Funds that used to be called welfare checks and food stamps are now called TANF and SNAP and are received monthly via electronic transfer. When you use the card in the machine at the register it automatically separates items eligible for the food stamps (SNAP) portion and the welfare (IOW cash.)

My immediate reaction as well.

As it is food stamps can be used to buy all the Banquet frozen fried chickens as there are funds on the card, but can't be used to buy the whole rotisserie chicken found in the deli department, which is actually healthier than the fried.

Typical GOP "solution" to a liberal issue:

1. Accept the Left's premise (i.e. Yeah, people need food stamps don't want them to go hungry and eat dog food)
2. Attack one of the symptoms, not the underlying, structural problem itself. (Instead of screaming from rooftops about how food stamps are an affront to American values, let's just go after one of the problems of it instead).
3. Accept being called "evil" and "mean-spirited" by the Left and their media lapdogs.
4. Grovel, apologize, and then "compromise" with the Dems (in this instance, several measly million dollars will be "cut," or rather, the rate of people obtaining food stamps will slow a few tenth of a percentage points).
5. Beat your chest and brag to conservatives about how much money was saved and if you donate to the RNC and help elect me, I'll "stand up" to more liberal spending.

It’s not the receivers of foo stams who decide these things. Why was Bob Dole known as the King of Foo Stams? For the good of the starving poor of Kansas? Yeah, the foo stam recipients have powerful lobbies on K Street, sure thang. If you don’t know who lobbies for foo stams paying bribes to your reps Rat Party or Stupid, I cain’t help you.

Yep. My daughter had food stamps one month, until she refused to get them any longer.

She could not buy chunk cheese from the deli but could buy sliced cheese.

I was shocked, she could buy sugared cereals but not organic.

It was so bizarre, oh yea the amount she received was $900 a month for the four of them.....$900. Where before she got laid off her budget was $300 and she made everything from scratch.......

Really do not how to resolve the issue.

People who need TEMPORARY help I have no issue with, its the generational crap that irks me.

If they can ban pizza in schools and trans-fats in hamburgers they can ban junk food from food stamps.

When they had the old Food Stamps, and not EBT cards, there was more regulation on what foods could be bought.

I was in Race Trac today...and their ready-made sandwich cooler/display mentions that “EBT can be used for this”. In old Food Stamp day...you could not buy such food

Ironic is that the ones who whine the most will be liberals who force kids to eat Michelle Lunches and push Organic food...

The massage parlor called Wildones on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and Mandela Avenuye in my neighbourhood has a sign in the window that says "We Accept Food Stamps".

NO WAY!!!! THAT CAN’T BE TRUE!!

Why I just read last week how some Freeper saw some food stamper use their little paper food stamps (which hasn’t been around for two decades) to buy beer!!!!

Yeah, you can’t believe everything you read. Even on FR.
