An entire community cut off, firefighters huddled on the side of a mountain after water swept their truck away, and -- with rescue helicopters grounded -- no way to reach them.
This is the scene facing authorities Thursday in Boulder County, Colorado, in the wake of what Sheriff Joe Pelle called a "devastating storm" that dumped more than half a foot of rain on the region during a 19-hour period.
The widespread flash flooding washed out roads, pushed dams to their limits and beyond and killed at least three people along Colorado's Rocky Mountain range, from Boulder south to Colorado Springs.

There was a bigger flood in 1975 so it is hardly a 50 year flood. They are ignoring the rural districts that are hit just as bad or worse. The Flooding extends all the way to Wyoming. The Big Thompson river washed out highway 34 again. Estes Park has all roads going into it closed.
They should be able to just alt+backspace out of the problem.
The Paiutes must have been keeping really good records.
I think that’s close to the normal annual rainfall for the area. So, yes, it’s a lot of rain in a short period of time and the ground is saturated.
Noah, it’s the Lord . . .
I think we have something called boats...
It isn’t clean water.
We are in S NM you have a few more days of rain coming your way.
We had this type of storm in Williamsburg c1988. You stay in the house...no problem. The roads were flooded. Anyone going out is stupid.
“More than half a foot of rain is a 500 year flood?”
It’s a western thing. The ground doesn’t suck up water in that quantity, especially if there’s been a wildfire. This is what a couple inches in the Albuquerque foothills does... that is a 20’ deep diversion channel.

Clean water is pouring out of the gutter pipes of every house, and will be for a couple of days.
It’s pretty bad here in Aurora. Someone I know posted footage of the Red Lobster near Havana off Alameda. Looked like a river. Watching from my hospital window all the traffic backed up on Colfax.
What will be next? An earthquake in Hollywood or San Fransicko would be appropriate.
flooding of biblical proportions. COANG fmtv tactical trucks preparing to move into lyons. rained early just west of littleton but isn’t raining here now. and we are on high ground too. creek water gets close to my house and it’s cubit time. ceiling too low for helos. and rain expected until friday
Most folks in Lyons are good solid country folk with the occasional hippy thrown in. At least a quarter of the population are prepared if not out right preppers. Three days wont be a big deal at all.
Hospital just announced over loud speaker to all staff plan b in effect...not a drill. Not sure if related to weather or not.
i saw that believe 225 and mississippi closed. i used to work at 225 and parker in the black darth vader bldgs
Desert ground is hard pan...can’t take more than a couple of tenths of rain at a time or the run off creates flooding conditions.
Very little is absorbed, the rest is channeled off or finds its own way.
Extremely dangerous, especially in low lying areas.
We have problems here when we get more than .25” in a monsoonal season thunderstorm...
