The brain-eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri has officially been found in the St. Bernard Parish, La. water supply following last week's death of 4-year-old who got the lethal infection when playing on a slip 'n slide.
"The water is safe to drink and there are basic precautions that families can take -- such as chlorinating their pools and avoiding getting water in their noses -- to protect themselves, though infection from this amoeba is very rare," Louisiana state health officer Jimmy Guidry said in a press release.
St. Bernard Parish is five miles from New Orleans.

They say it’s OK as long as you don’t get it in your nose. What about when you take a shower? It’s hard not to get some water in your nose when showering.
That amoeba is obviously in blackface. That’s racist !
“BP oil spill was no disaster.”
BALONEY
Isn’t this how the series “Walking Dead” starts out?
the media said it was a great environment catastrophe that would take decaes to clean up. right after they shut of that leak the stupid media stories stopped. there is more oil naturally seeping from the ocean every year than the bp oil spill .where is it now ? why isn’t the media covering this great disaster . i live here I’ve never seen any damn oil
many people here opened their eyes to how the media was lying and what the media is.
where is your bp oil disaster where ,where is your liberal media . i live down here .where is your global warming bs, where is your hurricanes, we don’t even have hurricanes this year
Deepwater hozizon was capped on 15 July 2010. I was in 30A (between Destin and PCB) in early September, and you had to hunt to find a tar ball on the “ruined” beaches. Yes there had been a lot of clean up, but the fact remains that I remember getting into much worse tar in the late 1960s visiting PCB as a kid, and that was from naturally occurring seeps.
The media scared away many tourists from New Orleans. Tourists thought oil was lapping on our shores and so that sea food here was ruined . many businesses suffered and many went out of business. there was never any oil here , the seafood wasn't ruined. the blatant media lies finally opened some eyes here of some people who saw the extreme evil of the media
i was on here when the “great catastrophe” was happening. all the freepers here were totally convinced it was really a great catastrophe. even here they trust the media completely. as you can see that freeper there really still believes the media . the media is the main problem we have. when people realize there is no news. what we think is news is something the mainstream media decided to pound into our heads to brainwash us or get us thinking or talking about that crap. global warming put out there to destroy capitalism the oil industry. bp oil disaster again meant to destroy capitalism and the oil industry. trayvon put out there to destroy our freedom and take away our gun rightsm, etc there is no news. news is just crap to advance the media's socialist agenda , to help the democrat party OBama, democrats and to grow government(socialism)). t
It was an absolute disaster for the seafood industry, which has never recovered to date. Many places went out of business and many boats stopped fishing. Pretty tough to find local shrimp, oysters, and crabs in the quality and quantity from the past. Most are coming from other areas.
I don’t recall ever hearing that it would take decades to clean up, but it will certainly take decades for the seafood industry to fully recover, if ever.
I really doubt you have ever even been to this area, because you seem to know nothing about what has taken place.
You don’t even live here. What do you know?
I have one data point, which I described reasonably completely. While I know there were areas hit much worse, when viewed in totality from where I sit, it appears the media and the Obama Administration (really all part of the same entity) made this event out to be much worse than it really was.
The cessation of drilling and the relocation of the deep water rigs to other parts of the globe is one of the worst results, and that occurred due to the reaction to the event, not the event itself.
PING!!!

Global Warming I will grant you is not real, but to say that the BP Oil Spill was not real...
Your Sir / Madame are full of Horse Crap.
I’m here and I know plenty. I know that the New Orleans area, all of S.E. Louisiana was a festering HOLE BEFORE Katrina and its a festering, contaminated HOLE waiting to slide into the Gulf now.
For a week the local news INSISTED that the amoeba was NOT in the parish water supply- then ...Woweee, lookee here, it’s in 4 places in the system! Think they’re telling you all now?? The infrastructure was destroyed by Katrina-and it was old before that. Pipes SUNK and broke and remain broken! Not for one second do I believe parish officials actually USE the cleansing chemicals they claim to- or else they use them infrequently to save money( which goes into official pockets). They do things on the cheap here-and corruption is normal. Then consider the incredible amount of chemicals from homes and businesses that leached into the soil when 10+ feet of water took a week or more to drain. Whole areas in St. Bernard had mutant sunflowers after Katrina, and several inches of soil had to be scraped off to make it ‘safe’ for people to live there.
I don’t trust the officials here AT ALL. I don’t trust New Orleans water or Jefferson parishes-anywhere in S.E. La. I don’t drink it and I’ve been using swim clamp thingies on my nose when showering. I don’t even put the water on my dogs heads when bathing them- I use bottled water.
Everything south of Lake Pontchatrain should be abandoned and left to the giant alligators and the hurricanes. But hey- come on down, tour Treme( bring your own toe tags), do a ‘fest’, and soak up the ‘ambience’ and the occasional killer germs and amoebas.
Agree about surface water supply. So many districts are going to that now. One district in our county had, for years, a Superior water rating. They’ve since gone to surface water and their rating has gone down :(
lol
The Not So Tidy Bowl City
Been using bottled water for 12 years now, even for pets.
Really think the clowns in St. Bernard didn't chlorinate the water enough, probably due to someones incompetence.
Not simply incompetence- but ‘saving money’ by using cheaper products and/or only a percentage and pocketing the remainder.
Everything is too broken, too old and too poor to fix. Then add in the fact that S.E. LA is geographically, socially, financially and meteorologically doomed. Come and drink and puke in the streets while you can.
bp oil disaster was not a disaster . you are a media puppet ,. i live here on the gulf . where is your stupid disaster now?

every year more oil seeped naturally from the Ocean floor than you and your media’s greatest environmental disaster.
your faith in the news media shows you to be full of horse crap.
St Bernard parish should bottle it and sell it in DC. Then the ameoba will become extinct from starvation.
