Rasmussen: Americans would rather see government shutdown than Obamacare funded

Katie LaPotin

U.S. Capitol A majority of Americans prefer that the government go through a partial shutdown to cut funding for Obamacare, according to a new study by Rasmussen Reports.

The study, which was released Tuesday, found that 51 percent of likely voters nationwide would rather see the government partially shut down when the current continuing resolution expires on September 30 than keep the president’s healthcare law funded at its current levels. Four in ten likely voters believe that we should avoid a government showdown by funding Obamacare at its current levels.

Included in the 51 percent of likely voters that would support the partial government shutdown are 57 percent of Independents and 78 percent of Republicans, as well as 61 percent of likely voters who have family in the military.

In addition, 53 percent of likely voters support a partial shutdown of the federal government so both parties can agree on what spending cuts to make. That includes 52 percent of Millennials, 62 percent of Independents and 59 percent of those who have family in the military.

Passing a continuing resolution by the end of the month is a top priority for Congress, however Congressional Republicans are split on whether or not to shut down the government over Obamacare. Several Tea Party senators including Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky have said that they will support a government shutdown, while House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia is firmly against the government shutdown.

President Obama’s signature legislative act remains widely unpopular among the American electorate. A NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday found that 44 percent of Americans consider Obamacare to be a bad idea and roughly the same believe that it will have a negative impact on the country’s healthcare system.

Millennials in particular aren’t thrilled about the looming implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as well. Just one in ten young Americans definitely plan on enrolling in the program’s healthcare exchanges in January according to a study released earlier this month by The Morning Consult.

Unfortunately for the president, the viability of the healthcare exchanges is dependent upon having a significant number of Millennials enrolled in the program to offset the costs of older Americans, who generally need more care than younger ones. To that end, the Obama administration and the Department of Health and Human Services has gone out of its way to recruit professional athletes and celebrities to convince Millennials to join the healthcare exchanges, but has seen little success thus far.

Rasmussen Reports conducted a telephone study of 1,000 likely voters nationwide September 14-15, 2013. The margin of error for the study is +/- 3 percent at a 95 percent confidence level.

I’ve come to the conclusion that these polls are meaningless.

Looking at what people do rather than what they say tells us the real story.

And yet a near majority approves of Homobama.

The schizophrenia in this country is severe.

And it doesn’t matter what the people want. I expect the Republican controlled House to bend over.

I agree.

Rasmussen is the worst. He has consistently had O’s approval higher than any other polling company (even MSM polls). I have a hard time believing any public poll anymore, especially on that has Rasmussen’s name on it.

The “people” want whatever is best for them. If that means taking their neighbors stuff through taxation, so be it. Their responses to this poll are not believable. This is why government should be small and limited. The people cannot be trusted to control their avarice. Only a strict adherence to the Constitution and a strong moral compass (best embodied by traditional Judeao-Christian ethics) will temper their greed.

If a majority of Americans are against ObamaCare now, imagine what will happen when everyone starts getting sticker shock in the next month or so when they find out how high their new ObamaCare premium bills will be.

I think the loss of doctor choice will also irk many.

Scott Rasmussen sold Rasmussen Reports, but the new owners bought the name or so it would seem. I agree with you that RR’s polling isn’t what it used to be.

I’d rather just see the government shutdown. So I’m in, but no Rep has the balls to do it.

I don’t see much of a down side in shutting down non-essential federal government services. I don’t see any upside at all in funding ObamaCare. Choosing between the two is an easy call.

It is now 5:30 PM Eastern, and the Government (in DC) is officially now Shut Down.

Essential Services will continue, overnight, until the government re-opens for business 16 hours from now.

Several Tea Party senators including Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky have said that they will support a government shutdown

I find that hard to believe. I suspect Sens Lee and Paul support defunding nobamacare, which IS NOT the same as supporting a government shut down.

As another Senator in the controversy, Ted Cruz, has said, "Let’s see if Obama is willing to shut down the government to fund Obamacare."

We need to be very careful to NOT talk about a government shut down and, rather, couch it in terms of defunding nobamacare.

I would like to shut the gubmint down until ObamaCare®. Further, I am happy to see Russia do the responsible thing, in regards to Syria.

We should step off and empower the world to solve problems.

We don’t need to be the proxy of war for other countries. If it’s so important let them act on their interests.

Most people would love to see the government shut down. We would all be better off they did nothing at all. They only seem to inflict more damage on this country with and every little piece of legislation. The govt. has become a thorn in the side of America the Great.
