RANSOM demands? Are we really talking about events in the Atlanta area in the year 2013, or is this a mislabeled story from a third-world country?

Kidnapping was a capital offense at one time.

I am actually pretty surprised that there hasn’t been more kidnapping in the US. In Mexico it is steady work. Here is a rather hideous example from about a month ago.

And the community is”fundraising” for ransom money? This is the freaking Twilight zone!!

No, there is way more to this story.

If that were for real, the FBI would obviously put up the money to catch these twerps.

So much stinks about this story.

How did they get a composite if they were masked?

Community fundraising for ransom makes me think the whole thing was cooked up to create a pretext for the fundraiser.

I really don’t know.... But, why would the family PUBLICIZE the ransom demand? (aside from fundraising).... Surely the FBI would want to provide some traceable cash....

And when is the exchange supposed to happen? And where? This is all twisted.

If they were ONLY after money, why go into an occupied house? That neighborhood is full homes....why THAT one? Weird.

Implication would be that the “victim” was in on the whole thing.

or the brother?

Of course it could all be legit....

Now ransom has changed? Up to 100,000...

Something definitely fishy.

When they wrote the original ransom note, they likely made a mistake and left off one of the zeros. Remember, these are products of publik child abuse, er, I mean edumacation.

Cut them some slack. Remember, they don't even have to keep track how many stamps they have left in of a book of food stamps. The cash register automatically reads the amount left on their EBT/SNAP cards, so they don't get much practice with numbers any more.

There should be orders to shoot them on sight.

If the child had been found and was safe, I'd agree. But she could be stashed somewhere and die of dehydration and starvation if they are killed.

The sick world that we live in makes me suspicious of the mother saying that she tried ‘to hide’ her kids, as though it would fit into the narrative of a kidnapping.

Yep.

I guess she wasn't "Kidnapped by K-Mart".

Just read a story that mom had a connection with the kidnappers.

She was arrested with one of the guys last year. BINGO!

The whole “gimme money pleeeaase, they took my baby” had scam written all over it, I've had street people try that one on me before, usually to pay utilities so social services would give them their kids back.

Once had one clearly stoned woman claim her infant was in her car that had been impounded, and she had to get her car out of the impound lot to feed her baby, she need her formula, need it bad.

It was just a matter of time. Hope there's a way to recover the “ransom” and give it back to the kindhearted but gullible people who responded to their pleading.

It's because the FBI comes down on kidnappers like the wrath of God. They have for a generation.

Tends to dampen the trade.

I can’t imagine how I would feel if those two had my child.

I can tell you how I'd feel: I'd shoot the bastards dead right between their eyes the moment I laid my eyes on 'em, and there would be nothing that could stop me from doing it. Period.

I'd be doing society a favor and I suspect any right-thinking jury would conclude the same.

If they were returned unharmed, I don’t thing I would just shoot them down like dogs.

If they were murdered etc., then yes I would do everything in my power to see they were wiped off the face of the earth.

Typically the FBI only gets involved in interstate kidnapping, or when a child under 12 is kidnapped. While they will track and offer assistance in other kidnapping cases, they will not directly involve themselves unless asked.

I’m not alone in wondering why a lot of the stuff the cartels are doing south of the border hasn’t moved north. They are kind of enigmatic that way.

They will send killers north to kill an opposing cartel member who has fled up here, and they are pretty bold in doing so. Plus, years ago, they stopped the war between the Crips and Bloods in L.A., because it was bad for business.

But profitable sidelines like kidnapping, blackmail and protection rackets have stayed down there - at least as far as the cartels are concerned.

At the same time, the Honduras based international MS-13 gang has had no problems migrating its activities up here. They even got into a brawl with the FBI, who immediately rounded up some 200 of them. Made a dent in their estimated US numbers of 8,000.

One of their mottos is “mata, roba, viola, controla” (”Kill, steal, rape, control”). Domestically, the group is involved in multiple crimes including murder, racketeering, drug trafficking, sex trafficking and human trafficking including prostitution.

They could do this so readily, it makes you wonder why the cartels haven’t as well?
