A long gun is a long gun.
When the FBI is called for a NICS check no distinction is made between the two.
They only ask long gun or pistol.
I think these cops are full of crap.

There is a special rule in Virginia for assault weapons, you have to prove State registry and proof of citizenship to get one. I think that is what stopped an AR-15 being used.

“I think these cops are full of crap.”

They are. There is no such law that I’m aware of in VA.

That is correct. The only info the FBI is provided beyond the buyer’s ID is whether a long gun or handgun. Other info is to stay with the FFL on his 4473.

However, I thought in order to purchase any type firearm from a dealer it has to be transferred through an FFL in the buyer’s home state.
