US Senators Target Top Russian Banks Over Syria

US lawmakers are calling for a crackdown against leading Russian lenders VTB, Vnesheconombank (VEB) and Gazprombank for allegedly helping Syrian President Bashar Assad circumvent sanctions, accusations the state-owned banks sharply denied Wednesday.

“The Syrians could not conduct this war without Russian financing,” US Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, said Tuesday at a policy discussion in Washington, Politico reported.

Blumenthal was one of four senators who sent a letter to US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew last week calling for sanctions against the three banks, accusing the lenders of enabling Assad to finance a war against rebel forces.

The senators cited “numerous reports” as saying that VEB had facilitated Syrian payments for S-300 missile batteries and that VTB holds Assad’s “personal funds.” They also cited the reports as saying that Gazprombank made “payments for crude oil,” though they did not specify the source of the reports.

And not in petro-federal reserve notes.

This is the thing that has the PsTB in such a state of panic. If Russian and China, followed by Brazil start trading oil with something other than the federal reserve note, the game is up for the folks that McCain, Graham, Obama and the rest of the filth answer to.

Whoa! Whoa!!

Here we are supplying weapons to the Muslim Brotherhood, but Russia isn’t supposed to help Assad?

Who are we to be the arbiters of what Russia should do?

IMO Russia is on the right side and we are dead wrong in this mess.

Yes, and IIRC Syria is one of the few countries without a central bank...

Wasn't it curious that the first thing the "rebels" in Libya did was set up a central bank, even before they had toppled the government. Stranger still - nobody in the media blinked an eye or thought to ask why such a curious thing took place.

Maybe our politicians could act tough toward Russia and China if they didn't weaken the country by burying us under trillions of dollars of debt. Washington DC is full of blowhards and creeps.

Democrats love war. Trade war, real war, it’s all just a game to them. Send them to the front and see how they run.

Exactly, and all economic collapse disputes between nations are resolved with war.

Yeah, and notice how Qaddafi's huge gold reserves just disappeared, those he intended to use to set up a gold backed central bank for North Africa independent of the IMF.

We will know that WW3 is about to start once Russian banks are put on the OFAC list and assets frozen here in the U.S.

Not that I think that'll happen.....

Thank you. We need to send these chickenhawks right to the front. McCain couldn’t wait to bunk up with his new friends in Syria. Is it senility or something worse?
