GLASTONBURY — You open the large yellow Pelican briefcase and have a decision to make: grab the pepper spray or the 800,000-volt stun gun. There's also the smoke grenade and the 13-foot window ladder for escapes. The hatchet-like tool can shatter windows and double as one of the best doorstops you've ever used.

The school survival and rescue kit, made by HABCO Industries in Glastonbury, is the latest product entering the developing market of school security, following the bullet-proofing of commonplace items like book bags and whiteboards.

The other day, a liberal at work said, with an incredulous look on his face, “Can you believe that some school districts in Georgia are actually putting assault rifles in the schools?”

“Well,” I answered, “maybe the next time some guy—like that guy up in Connecticut—is looking for a school to shoot up, he’ll avoid those schools.”

My friend desperately wanted to rebut that—gesturing and making a face like he wanted to say something—but couldn’t think of a word to say. And, normally, almost nothing renders this guy speechless.
