Poll: Republican voters have embraced libertarian values
United Liberty ^ | 9/12/13 | Jason Pye

The libertarian philosophy is taking the Republican Party by storm, according to a poll conducted by FreedomWorks, a DC-based grassroots service center with over 6 million members.

With Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) and many other liberty-minded politicians gaining influence, libertarianism has generated new interest inside the Republican Party, much to the chagrin of the GOP's political establishment....

"FreedomWorks' poll shows that 42 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of the word ‘libertarian,' and only 10 percent don't know the word, compared to 27 percent who don't know nationally," they added.

And the term "libertarian" may still turn off some Republican voters, the basic message of the philosophy earns significant favor. The poll found that 68% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents agree with the statement that "individuals should be free to do as they like as long as they don't hurt others, and that the government should keep out of people's day-to-day lives."

What's more, an eye-popping 78% of Republicans consider themselves to be "fiscally conservative, but socially moderate," which is a significant finding given the debate in the GOP on social issues.

Looking outside of just the Republican box, the poll found that 66% of respondents consider themselves to fiscally conservative and socially moderate.

These numbers show that the libertarian message is appealing, not only to Republican voters, but also to all Americans; further advancing the case for conservative-libertarian fusionism as a way to promote free market ideals, limited government, and personal liberty....

The libertarians and their party have no disagreement in libertarian philosophy.

Are you saying that libertarianism calls for discriminating against homosexuals in the military and in federal employment and immigration, and that the federal government should not recognize legal state marriages if it is two homosexuals?

LOL, libertarians and the pretense that they are just conservatives with a different name and that libertarianism is not pro-abortion, it is, that is why a pro-life position does not win libertarian internal arguments.

See post 142 for a start on the anti-God, anti-American, anti-social conservatism of libertarianism.

Sex, sex and more perverted sex. Is that all you think about? Are you projecting your secret desires onto me so you can feel better about your problems? Just kidding.

I do not belong to the Libertarian Party and do not agree with their official policy on immigration. Tell me what difference there is between a Republican or Democrat administration on border enforcement, and how it compares with the official Libertarian party position. You couldn’t get a playing card between them.

We could do quite well without the CIA. As far as I can tell they spend far more effort undermining conservative leaning politicians than they do actually gathering intelligence on our enemies. Did they see the collapse of the USSR coming? Why is Daniel Ortega still sucking air? The last time they actually did something good for the country, they were called the OSS.

The FBI is a decent organization as long as they don’t get wrapped up in some BATFE Charley Foxtrot like Waco or Ruby Ridge. For what amounts to a federal police force, they do a good job.

Rape is a property crime against a person’s control of their own body.

X rated movies are legal and HBO shows some pretty racy things. Do you let your kids watch that stuff?

Since I am pro life and have friends (I know that’s tough to believe) scattered across the political spectrum, I have some experience arguing pro life points with liberal Republicans, socialist Democrats and Libertarians.

By far the Libertarians are the easiest to change to pro life. The gist of the argument is approaching it from the baby’s perspective and pointing out that all the liberty in the world doesn’t matter if you aren’t alive.

Things have changed a lot in the last few years. The official Libertarian party policy has gone from plainly pro choice to what is basically no official position. Like the person who quits Wicca and joins the Jehovah’s Witnesses, they’re not where I’d like them to be but they ain’t what they were.

I posted a definition of classical liberalism (libertarianism), social issues are not covered by the definition. But implicit in the definition is a moral citizenry. A moral citizenry would condemn sodomy (at least male sodomy). So yeah that is what I am saying, kinda like the USA was until quite recently. You have laws against sodomy (condemning it) but you don’t enforce those laws (live and let live) except in extreme cases.

That is just a plain lie, the official position is zero restrictions, zero impediments, zero time limits, all the way up to delivery, it is a pure libertarian position.

“Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around the equal rights of others.” Thomas Jefferson wrote that.
Since sex in general seems to be something you wish for the government to control, let’s suppose your neighbor is copulating with one of his goats in plain view of your living room window. You could just look away. You could yell across the street “Hey Buddy! Take that crap around back!”. You could even come to an agreement to purchase the goat, thus rescuing the poor animal from your neighbor. But in your mind, you wish for badged bullies to come bludgeon your neighbor, confiscate his goat and toss his warped carcass into the hoosegow.

The people who founded this nation would have hanged or imprisoned a man for that.

Geez talking to libbers is annoying, I'll try again. Are you saying that libertarianism calls for discriminating against homosexuals in the military and in federal employment and immigration, and that the federal government should not recognize legal state marriages if it is two homosexuals?

You need to go check the Libertarian Party’s web site. Maybe you could send them an email to let them know how they aren’t “true” anymore.

Well noprogs, you lost me with that reply, anyone having public sex with an animal should be imprisoned or even better hanged.

Another bald faced lie, quit doing that.

Here is that fantastically radical, insane, libertarian position on immigration.
=========================================

COMPLETE PLATFORM TEXT
INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND CIVIL ORDER

IMMIGRATION:
The Issue: We welcome all refugees to our country and condemn the efforts of U.S. officials to create a new “Berlin Wall” which would keep them captive. We condemn the U.S. government’s policy of barring those refugees from our country and preventing Americans from assisting their passage to help them escape tyranny or improve their economic prospects.

The Principle: We hold that human rights should not be denied or abridged on the basis of nationality. Undocumented non-citizens should not be denied the fundamental freedom to labor and to move about unmolested. Furthermore, immigration must not be restricted for reasons of race, religion, political creed, age or sexual preference. We oppose government welfare and resettlement payments to non-citizens just as we oppose government welfare payments to all other persons.

Solutions: We condemn massive roundups of Hispanic Americans and others by the federal government in its hunt for individuals not possessing required government documents. We strongly oppose all measures that punish employers who hire undocumented workers. Such measures repress free enterprise, harass workers, and systematically discourage employers from hiring Hispanics.

Transitional Action: We call for the elimination of all restrictions on immigration, the abolition of the Immigration and Naturalization Service and the Border Patrol, and a declaration of full amnesty for all people who have entered the country illegally.

The founders hung many people for many things. Homosexual acts while in military service was a death sentence.

Various sexual acts are a symptom of our nation’s illness, not the cause. A person caught doing that today is likely to start receiving an SSI check.

Insane or incredibly dishonest.

Libertarianism does not call for discriminating against homosexuals in the military and in federal employment and immigration, and for the federal government to not recognize legal state marriages if it is two homosexuals, instead of a man and a woman.

Your posts are just getting goofy, it wasn't a death sentence in the military, it IS the libertarian position which is a symptom of sickness, and SSI doesn't figure into it at all.

Rejoice, the libertarians have helped put homosexuals in the military and gotten them equality.

You didn’t read my home page here on FR. All you have to do is click my name.

FYI, the last mass roundup and deportation was during the Eisenhower administration.

You are talking about the LP, they are nut jobs, not libertarians, but they have ruined the word libertarian so there is not much point in arguing. Kinda like the Rats ruined the word liberal. used to be liberal was something a conservative could be proud of being, today not so much. I try hard not to let the Marxist steal our language but in the case of liberal and libertarian I give up.
