Mexico in grip of hurricane disaster

The toll from devastating twin storms climbed to 80 on Wednesday as isolated areas of Mexico reported deaths and damage to the outside world. Mexican officials said another 58 people were missing in a massive landslide in the mountains north of Acapulco.

The storm that devastated the Pacific resort over the weekend regained strength on Wednesday and became hurricane Manuel, taking a route that could see it make landfall on Mexico's north-western coast. It would be a third blow to a country still reeling from the one-two punch of Manuel's first landfall and hurricane Ingrid on Mexico's eastern coast.

The US National Hurricane Centre said Manuel was hugging Mexico's coast late on Wednesday and was about five miles from the village of Altata. It called Manuel a small hurricane that was expected to produce up to 250mm (10in) of rain over the state of Sinaloa.

Sinaloa state civil protection authorities said some areas were flooding in the towns of Escuinapa, El Rosario and Mazatlan. At least 60 families were evacuated from the village of Yameto, authorities said. The affected area is mainly small fishing villages.

Outside Acapulco federal authorities reached the mountain village of La Pintada by helicopter and evacuated 334 people, many of whom were hurt, one seriously, said interior minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong.

Osorio Chong said at least 58 people were missing in the coffee-growing village where many homes were buried by a landslide, adding that there was a risk of more landslides. Officials had not yet seen any bodies, he said, despite reports from people in the area that at least 15 people had been killed.

He said the landslide went right through the middle of the village. "Several two-floor houses and the church were completely buried," Osorio Chong said.

Call on the deadly drug cartels for help.

I'm certain they're happy to lend a hand and toss in a few million to boot!

I was in Mazatlan, a beautiful resort town with wonderful beaches. I hope it isn’t trashed too much by the hurricane.

This should fill up my fishing hole at El Salto! Seriously most of the affected areas have been suffering terribly with their 4-5 year drought. Too much, too soon.

Wow! What a horrible attitude toward the suffering of fellow human beings - regardless of where they live. Such hatred!

‘’Hatred’’? I don’t know what planet you live on but Mexico is the neighbor from Hell. They seem to think simply because they share a border with us that somehow they have every right in the world to screw up their own country and then just waltz on in here, snap up taxpayer funded freebies of every kind and to hell with you gringo racista if you don’t like it. “lapata’’ is right, screw Mexico.

You write in generalizations. And, yes, it is hatred to not feel empathy for the suffering of other human beings - regardless of where they live. Wow -your post just did more to emphasize your hatred for others than clarify your previous one.

And just who the hell are you to take my inventory Ms/Mr Holier- than -thou? I don’t have sympathy for those who create their own misery and in the process bring it on to others. And when the day comes that you can walk on water , maybe you’ll have the moral authority to judge me. In the meantime, get lost.

I refuse to “get lost” as you put it - you sound like a liberal - sit down, shut up - get lost - etc. Sound familiar? God help you with your judgmental attitude toward others. It is you - not me - who has a holier-than-thou philosophy. You seem to think you are superior to others regardless of which country they were born. You do know that we have no control over that, don’t you? I can’t walk on water, but I know the One who can.

You're only half right. I used to be a liberal. And a drunk. The two are a lot alike. It's all emotion. Emotion over intellect. Today however I'm sober. One day at a time. My judgmental attitude? Good Lord, is irony lost on you. Let explain this for you since you seem to be not too bright. I'm not hard-hearted against victims of a natural disaster. I live pretty close to what is still “Ground Zero’’ from Hurricane Sandy.
What angers me is that if the Mexican people were a nation and a people who had respect for and the rule of law then perhaps they would have been better prepared for this situation. Instead Mexico is a violent, racist class-ridden kleptocracy where bribery is the law and where Mexican politicians steal everything in sight and blame the United States .. And no, I don't feel myself to be superior to anyone else, not at all. I try everyday to live usefully and walk humbly under the grace of God. But I have seen as so many other Americans and those here have seen a nation of people, Mexicans, who have absolutely no respect for our laws, our borders, our culture, our language and our history. And they do it with a galling and pugnacious pride. They over-load hospitals, schools and jails and don't pay a dime in taxes for it and never cease to demand more. You call me a ''hater''? Maybe you've never hear of "La Raza'', a Mexican-American hate group that loudly proclaims it will eliminate us gringos'' (whites and other native born peoples) and establish "Aztlan''. Or Mecha, another militant and bigoted Mexican hate group. Maybe you weren't around on May 1st 2006 when thousand of Mexicans marched in streets all across America, waving their damned flag and disrespecting ours. Look into these groups, Google their names and see for yourself and then maybe you'll lose the rather pungent odor of self-righteousness waffling off you. If no one has ever told you, self-righteousness is just a phony form of respectability. And stop posting to me , I've had enough of your drivel.
