The kind of violence that typically plagues Chicago does not handily fit the terms of the national debate on assault weapons and mass shootings.

While tragedies in Newtown, Conn., Aurora, Colo., and other cities have made the nation stop and take notice, the nearly daily killings in Chicago more often make headlines only by the periodic tallying of their collective toll. Most often, the approximately 500 people slain last year in Chicago were shot one at a time, usually with a handgun that could be concealed in a waistband or jacket pocket.

The gun violence that unfolded Thursday night at Cornell Square Park in the Back of the Yards neighborhood was different.

I have a hazy memory of a Chicago TV interviewer asking a lady, who lost at least one family member to such violence in an area plagued with gangs, what she was going to do. The woman responded “Buy a gun, I need to protect myself.” The reporter looked puzzled.

Since controlling the language is a part of the culture war where we are fairly weak I propose a term designating those blacks (young, feral,urban males) responsible for the carnage. Doing this separates this group from other blacks who wind up on the collateral damage end of this. Hence the problem can be summed up in one simple sentence as ‘Nebros shooting nebros.’

Maybe I should expand that comment a bit. What, or rather who, I was referring to are the usually "well to do" inner circle pals of the politicos who have an inordinately strong influence on the whos, whats, wheres, and whens of practically all local lawmaking and overall governance.

One of my now deceased uncles was in that category, but in a much smaller city. Although he held a minor elected office in the county government for almost 4 decades he was also socially and politically "well connected" in that relatively small domain, and he made very good financial, political, and social use of his "good ole boy" connections to most of the wealthy and prominent families of that city and county.

That was long ago and far away from today's world, but I suppose that situation is still the norm in most local government nowadays, and if so Chicago is no doubt a good example.

The initial reports also described the gun used tin the shooting as an AR-15 assault weapon (never mind that 7.62 and .223/5.56 cartridges aren't interchangeable), the media was going to bash the AR's again.
