Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged the Ukraine to resist increasing Russian pressure to back out of signing a cooperation agreement with the European Union that would move this former Soviet republic closer to the west.
At a political star-studded conference here in the historic Livadia Palace, where Franklin D. Roosevelt , Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill met in 1945 to divide up post-war Europe, the Clintons, in separate speeches, portrayed the impending decision by the Ukraine and the 28-member European Union to sign the agreement as what Mrs. Clinton called a crossroads moment for this nation of 46 million people, which Russia has long considered not only its bread basket, but an integral part of its former empire.
But the Clintons, directly and indirectly urged Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to disregard Russian pressure and do whatever was in his countrys best political and economic interests.

Nothing like reneging on the ballistic missile defense for the former east block to make the neighbors nervous.
He’s an obstinate one that seems to need to learn the hard way. Problem is, that is the wrong kind (and most dangerous kind) of person to be in the position of POTUS.
RUN LIKE HELL UKRAINE... If the clintons want it... then “it” is of satan!
“Hes an obstinate one that seems to need to learn the hard way. Problem is, that is the wrong kind (and most dangerous kind) of person to be in the position of POTUS.”
Unfortunately, his “had way” is likely to get a lot of good people killed for no good reason.
The feds could greatly help Ukraine by green-lighting the Cove Point LNG project. Of course a corresponding receiving facility would have to built in Ukraine. That would threaten the natural gas stranglehold Russia has on Ukraine and parts of the EU.
Our natural gas resources can be turned into an economic weapon just as the Saudis fear. The question is would it undermine terrorism by cutting cash flow into the Middle East or would it destabilize Saudi Arabia and result in more problems. Personally I’d love to find out by favoring conversion of vehicles here to multifuel capability and exporting natural gas. Driving world oil prices to levels that would undermine the Iranian regime would be the icing on the cake.
Another reason all should question the attacks on Putin and Russia right now...
There is nothing more demonstrative of the failure of Free Trade Communist Globalism than the EU. Free Trade does not work....the EU is example #1
Sad part is that Bush, McCain, Romney, and a number of other GOP Communist Globalists would be pushing the same thing..even though the EU is an economic disaster
No, Putin and Russia are not the good guys...but the EU right now is a huge economic threat that would be worse than Russian nukes.
Also, Obama right now is trying to get a US-EU Free Trade deal done. I wonder why the Free Trader Communist Globalists who troll FR forums do not want to discuss this?
Ukraine is a very tricky situation. You still have a sizable Russian population within its’ borders that want to be a part of Russia. Ukraine is a potential powder keg. Russia and Ukraine are 1,2 in terms of largest armies in Europe.
What all y’all said....times 2.
Don’t forget the IMF and their involvement.
They are in this up to their necks with the Clintons.
But the Ukraine has a choice whether to be European or become Asian along with Russia.
I think BJ has other motives in this fight. Ukrainian women have been voted the most beautiful in the world surpassing Swedish women.
Look, Ukraine hosted the World Cup last year to showcase their country to the EU. They have their own currency known as the Hrivna (pronounced greev-na) which is not easily tradable. It was recently devalued. I believe they would love to adopt the euro and open trade for themselves and thus improve their standard of living. Unfortunately, their government is very corrupt, and by what I can tell, not much of a middle class exists. They are wonderful people who work hard and really admire the U.S.
That would be a beautiful thing.
