The photos of the perps would look good on range targets.

Clearly this off-duty SAS "gun-slinger" should be arrested for violating some sort of Kenyan gun laws! No Victoria Cross for you soldier!

I wonder if the opportunity presented itself for him to cap any villains, possibly to then use their weapons against their comrades.

This reminded me of an incident in Iraq before the ground invasion of Gulf War I. A small team of five US Special Forces were observing an important town from a spider hole, when a small boy, the son of a shepherd, spotted them and gave out the alarm.

The armed men of the town attacked them, and many were killed, with the Green Berets low crawling out to recover their enemies weapons and ammunition. More and more Iraqi military reinforcements arrived in the town and engaged the Green Berets.

By the time attack helicopters arrived to evacuate them, they had killed some 200 enemy, and had more arms and ammo than before they had begun. They suffered no injury.

At the time and since I have seen this as a profound lesson of how a few, or even one, skilled, trained, and disciplined individuals can run roughshod over large numbers of heavily armed and equipped enemies.

By the account in this story, he chose to evacuate many innocent civilians. And this was his tactical choice. But what if he had chosen to instead confront the problem instead of mitigating it?

good on him...

but talk about a hodgepodge of weaponry, in pic's i've seen it's SCAR's and M16's in one, in another it's an FN and M4 and in several it's G3's and AK's

must keep the armorer's busy

‘What he did was so heroic. He was having coffee with friends when it happened.

‘He went back in 12 times and saved 100 people. Imagine going back in when you knew what was going on inside.’

"Pte. Thomas Cole: Why is it us? Why us?

Colour Sergeant Bourne: Because we're here, lad. Nobody else. Just us."

He was there.

Saw the photo earlier, without his face obscured. Don’t remember what the caption was, but it did not identify him as SAS.

Looked like he was quite capable of taking care of business. I did not see the weapon tucked in his waist then, but is is the same photo.

SAS have always been tough well trained soldiers.

The incident closest to the one you've described is Bravo Two Zero. Unfortunately, that turned out about as well as such engagements typically do. Special forces soldiers aren't supermen. Their specialty is getting in and out before anyone notices. Once seen, if they're on foot, it's only a matter of time before they're neutralized - captured or killed. All the opposition has to do is surround them at a safe distance and shoot at them to keep their heads down. The enemy can call in artillery and air strikes, in addition to having unlimited ammo and numerical superiority. And knowing the terrain like the backs of their hands.

Bottom line is that he was putting himself in extreme danger in returning to the mall - he would have been too distracted by the people he was pulling out to have much situational awareness, and he was one guy with a pistol going up against an unknown number of opponents armed with at least automatic rifles and grenades, for whom the entire mall was a free fire zone. My hat’s off to him.

I agree that it was totally situational, and judgment calls have to be made. It’s just that I have known so many special ops-types who would have been hyper-aggressive killing machines in such a situation, that I have to wonder.

There are some people who are just naturally born warrior types, and ordinary people stacked up against them just don’t have a chance.

The English military has more than one group with similar reputation. Different expertise but all known effective.

The US Military has their own. Often unrecognized by the public. That is how it is.
