No communion for Nancy Pelosi: Vatican court head
The Washington Times ^ | September 24, 2013 | Cheryl K. Chumley

Posted on 09/24/2013 10:18:48 AM PDT by Obama_Is_Sabotaging_America

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has no Catholic right to be granted Communion, said the leading cardinal of the highest court at the Vatican.

Mrs. Pelosi should be denied Communion until she changes her advocacy views on abortion, Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke said, according to the Western Center for Journalism.

That’s canon law, not opinion, he said. Canon 915 states that Catholics who are stubbornly contrary “in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.”

And Cardinal Burke said Mrs. Pelosi fits the definition.

They should put Congressman Juan Vargas (D) California on that list too. He has been seen at communion in San Diego recently. His voting record is the same as Pelosi’s.

She claimed that being pro abortion was part of her catholic faith. She is spreading false doctrine and deserves to be excommunicated. The church should stand up for itself and say that the Dems who support abortion are not Catholics in good standing and the people who vote for them are not either.

Well, if this is the case, then shouldn’t it apply to all the other “catholic” politicians who support abortion ( and even gay marriage ) out there? John Kerry, Dick Durbin, Patrick Leahy, Barbara Mikulski, Patty Murray, Claire McCaskill, etc.?

All those others are also excommunicated “latae sentiae” and they know it. This amounts to the Vatican singling out Nancy Pelosi probably because she starts every sentence with “My Catholic faith requires me to” and finishes it with something terrible, and because of her unique position of power. The Vatican is saying to the world, “Nancy Pelosi’s claims are contrary to the Catholic faith and must be opposed by all people of good will.”

The good Cardinal Burke does know of the scandal Pelosi flagrantly causes the lay faithful in the US, and also the broader public damage she causes the Church in general.

Now, the guilty, complicit bishops and cardinals and priests offering her Holy Communion must surely be in line for correction, also.

Justice served and delivered is as scandalously late from within the Church, as it is so outside the Church.

Pelosi's local bishop is Archbishop Salvitore Cordileone in San Francisco. He's a Good Guy, one of the vertebrates. Be expecting to hear from him soon.

My guess is that Cardinal Burke --- who, as head of the Apostolic Signatura, is the equivalent of the Chief Justice of the USSC over in Rome --- would not have made this statement in the terms he did ("That’s canon law, not opinion") if Pope Francis and Abp Cordileone weren't ready and willing to enforce.

On the other hand, I'm also half expecting to hear a little whimpering from Abp. Donald Wuerl of DC, who --- like Prezzy Obama --- thinks he has the right to refuse to enforce any legislation he doesn't like. He' probably scrambling to see whether it's still possible to lose this somewhere in the back of his filing cabinet until Christ comes again.

To which I say, "Maranatha" ---

Pray and Watch.

The Catholic church teaches that one who receives the Eucharist unworthily “drinks damnation upon himself.”

(”Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.” 1 Cor 11:27-29)

“Unworthily,” to Catholics, is understood to mean in a state of unrepentent, mortal sin, or without recognizing that the Eucharist is literally and objectively the body and blood of Christ. The latter reason is why Catholics do not offer Protestants the eucharist, not as an act of hatred or judgment, but of charity, so that the Protestant does not spiritually harm himself; the former reason is the Church affirming that salvation requires repentance from sin.

Frequently Asked Questions
regarding
THE SIN OF ABORTION
AND THE
SACRAMENT OF CONFESSION.

Q. 1. Does the Catechism of the Catholic Church teach us anything about how a Catholic caan be forgiven of the sin of abortion?

A. 1. The following two sections of the Catechism of the Catholic Church state:

# 2272 Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. “A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae,” [CIC, can. 1398] “by the very commission of the offense,” [CIC, can. 1314] and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law. [Cf. CIC, cann. 1323-1324] The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society. [1463]

# 1463 Certain particularly grave sins incur excommunication, the most severe ecclesiastical penalty, which impedes the reception of the sacraments and the exercise of certain ecclesiastical acts, and for which absolution consequently cannot be granted, according to canon law, except by the Pope, the bishop of the place or priests authorized by them. [Cf. CIC, cann. 1331; 1354-1357; CCEO, can. 1431; 1434; 1420] In danger of death any priest, even if deprived of faculties for hearing confessions, can absolve from every sin and excommunication. [Cf. CIC, can. 976; CCEO, can. 725] [982]

Q. 2. What does that mean in simple English?

A. 2. It means that anyone who has an abortion, participates in an abortion, or supports an abortion, he or she, by the previously mentioned actions, is automatically excommunicated from the Catholic Church. (C.C.C. # 2273)

Accordingly, that person can no longer receive any of the Sacraments of the Catholic Church, be it the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist (Communion), Marriage or the Sacrament of Confession. For an excommunication to be lifted (ended), the sinner must approach the local Bishop, inform him of his/her “latae sententiae” excommunication through the sin of abortion and ask the Bishop to have the excommunication lifted (ended) and to be absolved of the sin of abortion. The Bishop may authorize a priest to specifically deal with this absolution on his behalf. (C.C.C. # 1463) Contrary to the popular belief of Catholics, this does not mean that all priests can absolve a penitent of the excommunication. Only a priest who is specifically appointed by the Bishop to do so, may do so.

Q. 3. Does that mean that if a woman had an abortion and confessed it to a priest who had not been specifically appointed by the local Bishop to lift her excommunication, that her sin was never forgiven?

A. 3. That is correct! There have been many instances where priests did not realize that an abortion incurs an automatic excommunication. As such, while they may enjoy the authority to forgive sins, they do not have the authority to lift excommunications. Consequently, while a person is excommunicated, that person cannot validly receive any of the Sacraments, that including the Sacrament of Confession. (Exception: In danger of death any priest, even if deprived of faculties for hearing confessions, any priest can absolve from every sin and excommunication.)

Q. 4. That being the case, most likely, a very large number of women never had their sin of abortion forgiven because they never had their excommunication lifted by their local Bishop or by a priest appointed by the local Bishop to do so.

A. 4. I agree with that. Most likely, less than 25% of Catholics who had an abortion, participated in one, or supported an abortion, actually had their sins forgiven because they did not observe the Church policy on the matter.

Q. 5. Would the same apply to Catholic politicians who support abortions?

A. 5. Yes! They are automatically excommunicated and are no longer able to enjoy any of the Church Sacraments. To receive any of the Church Sacraments after having been excommunicated, these politicians are drawing the wrath of God against them for continuing to insult the Lord Jesus after having shown little respect for life through the support of abortions.
http://www.catholicdoors.com/faq/qu70.htm

So yes, technically all of them are excommunicated.

I think we can make sure there are consequences. I’m confident there are faithful Catholics with cameras ready to birddog her and document any offense, which would be sacrilegious abuse of a Sacrament: a serious bad.

That is all well and good. I would correct your post a bit - in your opening line, you said “the Catholic church teaches”, but as your following parenthetical verifies, the Apostle Paul, centuries before the “Catholic Church”, taught the same.

But the Catholic church has been threatening politicians for many years with the cutting off of communion for those who support abortion. It has yet to materialize, and I do not expect it to arrive any time soon.

True. But the Catholic church teaches that everything the Catholic church teaches was taught, albeit perhaps in a more conceptually primitive way*, since the apostles.

(*Several concepts, such as the trinity, transubstantiation, and temporal purgation of souls in the afterlife were not taught in so many words by the apostles.)

I say, “the Catholic church teaches” out of recognition that not all Christian believers interpret the teaching of the apostles in the same manner.

But they won’t because they are actually complicit in this behavior by tacitly and overtly endorsing it.

See Wayne Perry, BSA National President as a prime example. He met with and petitioned the church leaders in SLC to endorse and support the recent BSA membership policy (homo scouts) change.

But as non-Catholic, I thank the Catholic Church for actually coming out and making a public statement regarding the witch and her evil ways.

Her bishop has jurisdiction over pastoral matters in his diocese, such as a politician giving scandal. This is the principle of subsidiarity.

Regardless, there probably exists within canon (Church) law, a means to put pressure on, or discipline a bishop, that I'm not aware of.

Being barred from Communion is not quite full excommunication. What Cardinal Burke is invoking is Canon 915, which states that she must not be offered Holy Communion. It puts the onus on the priest (or deacon, or whoever is distributing Communion) to turn her away her if she approaches.

Excommunication goes further: it states that she cannot validly receive ANY Sacrament of the Church-- including, as I understand it, even Reconciliation or Anointing of the Sick, classically can't be given a Catholic Funeral, can't be buried in consecrated ground --- until she has the excommunication lifted by her bishop. That, if imposed on her, would mean that an ordinary parish priest can't even give her absolution in Confession, unless she is cleared first by Abp Cordileone or by a priest deputized for the purpose by Abp. Cordileone.

So she's not being excommunicated (from the whole sacramental life of the Church). But she IS to be turned away from Communion, which is very, very serious.

Complicating this, is that "successfully procuring an abortion" incurs automatic ("latae sentenciae") excommunicaton. She's never (to my knowledge) aborted any of her babies; nor has she performed an abortion on somebody else; but the question is, if she voted for funds for abortion, does that make her an accomplice? Is this what Moral Law calls "formal cooperation" or "proximate material cooperation" (explanation at link)? Because then she'd come under the Canon for accessories and accomplices.

I am not any kind of expert on Canon Law (far from it) so if I have gotten the gist of this wrong, I would be grateful for correction. FReeper Dangus? EBH?

>> But the Catholic church has been threatening politicians for many years with the cutting off of communion for those who support abortion. It has yet to materialize, and I do not expect it to arrive any time soon. <<

The excommunications have happened. Given that every bishop has independent apostolic authority, and lacks spies in every parish, and religious orders members do not report to a bishop, it’s very possible that a pro-abortion politician continues to receive communion. For instance, John Kerry knows he cannot receive communion from the diocesan priests of the archdiocese of Boston, so he goes to a renegade religious order priest at the Paulist Center. Or, like at the papal installation, he can mix among 3,000 Italian priests who have no clue what he looks like. Hopefully, by further clarifications such as this, even the Paulists will stop offering communion, and Nancy Pelosi is stripped of any credibility when she begins any sentence with “As a devout Catholic...”

What more could you ask for? What Protestant cannot find another church in their own congregational family to worship with? What pro-abortion Southern Baptist can’t find a pro-abortion Southern Baptist minister to worship with? What Presbyterian can’t simply go PCUSA? What Anglican can’t go Episcopalian? A Baptist convention cannot dictate doctrinal adherence by member congregations; similarly, the Pope can do little more than make his preferences clear to his bishops. This in no way invalidates the polity of the Protestant churches — I have other doctrinal differences with them. I only mean to emphasize that the Catholic problem of enforcing orthodoxy is hardly unique.

A dissident bishop who doesn’t commit heresy is very difficult to remove. Yet proclamations such as these are not at all worthless; Now, the whole world knows that when Nancy Pelosi says, “As a Catholic, I believe...” she is literally a damned liar. And she knows she is going to Hell. What is it to you that she may steal the eucharist from a cooperate, dissident priest? He will go to Hell with her for desecrating the sacrament, and permitting false doctrine. She piles damnation upon damnation on herself. And the world knows it, or at least, if it doesn’t believe it, knows that the Catholic church teaches it.
