Police have enlisted the help of a trapper to round up a group of feral hogs scaring residents of a subdivision in suburban Atlanta.

Some parents fear sending their children to a school bus stop in the Lithonia area, where up to four of the hogs are roaming the streets and eating trash in front yards.

Authorities hope the hogs can be trapped in cages by Wednesday morning, DeKalb County police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.

“They’re causing quite a stir to say the least,” Parish said shortly before noon Tuesday, as she headed out to the neighborhood, about 17 miles east of downtown Atlanta.

The police department’s animal control officers were at the scene, but the plan was for a volunteer trapper to actually capture the animals.

If they’d keep their yards clean this wouldn’t happen...

Some of those feral hogs can get big. They are strong and dangerous. Get one and the others might get you. I suggest licensing bow hunters to cruise in pickup trucks.

“...In the early 1900s, several animals escaped from their enclosures at a hunting preserve at a mountain known as Hooper Bald in North Carolina, and they mated with feral hogs in the surrounding area. That population then spread into other areas of the Southeast, including Georgia, according to research done by Dr. Jack Mayer of the Savannah River National Laboratory in Aiken, S.C...”
-
Dr. Jack Mayer is an idiot when he says,
“animals escaped and they mated with feral hogs”
where the hell does he think those feral hogs came from?

It is just plain stupid for him to say that all wild hogs are a result of a single incident.

It only takes a generation or so for domestic pigs to go feral in the wild.
There have been literally thousands of times that pigs have gotten loose from a farm and bred in the woods and swamps and developed into feral hog populations.

The article is not clear as to exactly where this incident occurred in the Lithonia area.
I am only one county away from there.

Best solution is to release some Wyoming wolves and Florida panthers in Lithonia.

They'll have to pigs under control in no time...and Yankees and yutes too.

Folks in Georgia are calling the police to take care of some wild hogs? Free pork? What has happened to GA? Did all the good ol boys move to Alabama?

I have seen that article before and I believe he was
talking about Russian or German wild boar that mated
with feral hogs. They had been brought over to a
hunting preserve and got loose.

If 22LRs can penetrate the skull, would 4 or 5 do the job?

Otherwise the kids have to carry 12 ga w/ slugs.

I know a guy who hunts wild hogs in south Georgia. He says AR-15 w/ high cap mag is the weapon used by many. Feral hogs are apparently a big problem down there.

Hogs aren’t the only ferals that roam the streets of Atlanta and scare people.

This is metro Atlanta.

The only real Georgians living in Atlanta are in deep cover.

Yep.

I am in South GA and that is a good business (and popular sport) down here with a few folks.

The AR is the weapon of choice...with 30 rnd mags and red dot optics. They usually use night vision equipment also.

I’ll expound, the killing of hogs should be done before they become nuisance in urban areas. But, then America is becoming more and more sissified so that probably won’t happen.

May be true, but the article implies that every wild pig in the U.S. is a result of that.

No, the human hogs are indigenous only to the DC area and mostly inside the beltway.

If any of those got loose in GA or in the other 57 states...we are doomed.
