Short answer: It was his turn.
Long answer: The anti-Huckabee efforts caused Huckabee's support to drop in South Carolina. The problem was, McCain was a strong #2 in SC. The result was McCain won SC, the MSM said McCain had the momentum, and he then won Florida (prior to the SC primary Guliani was leading in FL).
Personally, I think if Huckster had won SC, Guliani would have won FL, McCain would have had to drop out, and the race would have been blown wide open with Fred Thompson having a strong chance in the Super Tuesday primaries. Thompson's whole strategy was to keep his powder dry until Super Tuesday.
I really believe if Huckster had won SC, Thompson would have ended up as the nominee. However, he probably still would have lost to Obama.
I never believed the claims either, especially the mythology-building that was obviously behind them, and were designed strictly to “fund” a burgeoning political career—it seems that Democrats are more eager to do this kind of thing because they know their “patriotism” is always in question, which is another reason to consider McCain basically a Democrat.

It’s not talked about much in history class, but the US did not declare war on Germany immediately after Pearl Harbor. We declared war on Japan. Germany, i.e., Hitler, then declared war on the US, much to the dismay of Hitler’s general staff, because he had a pact with the Japanese and a disdain for the US’s fighting ability. Only then, in return, did the US declare war on Germany.

I’ve finally come around to despise McCain.
A lot of Senators were old men when I was in High school.
Half of them have lived in Washington for over 25 years and visit their home states a few weeks out of the year.
We need a generational change in Washington.
Most of these guys are long since old enough to be in nursing homes and many of them actually belong there due to a term the CIA coined for the diminished capabilities of the Brezhnev gang -”geriatric effort”.
They simply are not up the job and have no intention of or stake in living in the world they are creating
