Detroit will get some federal help in dealing with the largest municipal bankruptcy in the nation's history. Several Obama administration cabinet secretaries are due in town Friday with more than $300 million in federal aid.
But don't call it a bailout. Most of the money is coming from existing federal programs for which Detroit is already eligible. Federal officials are pledging to streamline the flow of money to the cash-strapped city, providing Detroit with some of the resources and assistance they need to access the various programs. They are also helping the city to tap into funds available from private foundations and businesses. None of this money will go to help reduce the staggering debt that forced its July bankruptcy filing.
The federal officials are also removing red tape that was stopping Detroit from getting available funds. For example, the city was granted a waiver so that it could get a $7 million grant for a program that paid to demolish blighted homes. Detroit will now be able to use that grant to clear some commercial properties.
That $7 million is part of nearly $150 million the city will receive to clear blighted and abandoned properties, a major problem for a city that has lost a large percentage of its population and tax base in recent decades.

This is the media giving credit to Obama for things he has little to do with. The fact is that hundreds of millions is going to dozens of cities around the country.
Just you wait. Before they can demolish a house, the EPA will require an environmental impact statement, and the Labor Dept and NLRB will demand that they use union employees on the job
By “federal help” read hard earned money looted from taxpayers in the rest of the country who had nothing to do with the self-inflicted disaster caused by black democrats that is Detroit.
Why not just take the $300 million out in front of the White House and burn it....it will accomplish as much...

Compare that to using the $300M to level the place and start over again with fresh investments. (Kind of like the obamacare "death panel" analysis that will be used to determine which Americans "deserve" treatment).
They just got caught handing out pension money to people who weren’t eligible.

Detroit and other hell hole cities ‘survive’ only on our dollars. Left to themselves, they would fall apart and become somalia in 2 years.

Sadly. $230 million lost to a predictably failed Democrat development program called Rio Nuevo, control of which was recently seized from them by the Republicans in Phoenix to stop the bleeding.

And Nancy Pelosi says there’s no more room to cut in the Federal Budget, well here’s $300 million.
More federal and state aid to bankrupt Detroit is like baking cakes to serve to the passengers as the Titanic was sinking, won’t change the outcome or please the guests.
