End ‘stand your ground’ in Illinois (arf alert)
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 28 sept 2013

So-called “stand your ground laws” have led to unnecessary shootings around the country, and now Illinois is on the brink of having one of its own sneak onto the books through the back door. The Legislature should act to prevent that before anyone dies in one of those stupidly unnecessary confrontations.

Historically, laws in America generally have required people to retreat from confrontations if possible before resorting to lethal force. But in recent years, stand your ground laws — which allow individuals claiming to fear for their lives to use such force even if they have the opportunity to back away — have spread in some form to about 30 states. Opponents — and that would include this editorial page — call them “shoot first” laws.

Illinois does not have such a statute on the books, but past court rulings in the state appear to grant the “stand your ground” right anyway. Until now, that hasn’t been a significant issue because Illinoisans were not allowed to carry concealed firearms in public. But this year, the Legislature authorized the concealed carrying of weapons, and the State Police expect to start issuing permits

"Opponents — and that would include this editorial page — call them “shoot first” laws. "

Works for the cops, as the CoP in the largest city in Crook County lately proclaimed.

“Historically, laws in America generally have required people to retreat from confrontations if possible before resorting to lethal force.”

Really? More likely those laws were put on the books following court cases wherein someone using self defense was found to be not credible. Some states even allowed for shooting fleeing felons, perhaps even in the back!

I wonder if they’ld change their mind if an Aryan Brotherhood member ambushed and assaulted them as they were walking back to their vehicle?

Once again the Chicago "news media" gets it wrong.

Illinois already has a Stand Your Ground law, and none other than Barack Hussein Obama voted for it when he was a State Senator. It's one of the few bills that Obama didn't vote "present" on!

GO FIGURE!

By the way, the biggest beneficiaries of Stand You Ground happen to be the folks who live in the two neighborhoods (Austin, Gresham) in Chicago that are responsible for making Chicago the murder capital of the world.

And here we have the Chicago Sun Times demanding that those blacks who are not criminals in these two neighborhoods not be able to stand their ground and defend themselves when they're getting shot at?

Now I'd call that RACIST!

What if the attacker is athletic and say plays basketball and lifts weights and you CAN’T evade by fleeing? Liberals never think things through to their conclusion. I think what they really want is the Stand and Take Your Beating, Whitey law on the books.

Don’t people understand it is totally unnecessary to be able to defend themselves.

Just call the Police and wait 30 minutes they will be right out to help you.

See how "unnecessary" you think they are when it's you being robbed, raped, and/or murdered by some Obama's son looking urban ute or group there of...... douchebag.

Absolutely. In Texas a private citizen (not law enforcement) can use deadly force to prevent or stop the commission of a felony. Someone fleeing with my wallet/tv/car is in the commission of a felony.

One of the murder capitals of the world - Chicago - wants to make sure citizens can’t defend themselves against gangbangers with guns? I hope I read this wrong...

Be sure to check out the comments on that page. Even their own readers are calling the editorialist a stupid liberal.

At this point, except for a tiny number of elitist liberals and criminal apologists, most everyone in the US likes SYG.

And they like it for the best of all reasons: because it makes sense. Common sense, rational sense, statistical sense, even emotional and instinctual sense.
