Conservatives fear another split Republican vote, with path for Christie win
The Washington Times ^ | 30 September 2013 | Ralph Z. Hallow

If New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has any chance of securing the Republican presidential nomination, he just might have to thank such darlings of the tea party movement as Rand Paul and Ted Cruz for an unlikely path to victory.

As Mr. Paul’s and Mr. Cruz’s recent filibusters on the Senate floor have shown, the 2016 quest for the White House is well underway. A fierce battle among the new small-government, libertarian stars is already raging.

That has left a growing number of conservative activists voicing concerns publicly about a scenario that would let a moderate Republican like Mr. Christie slip through the cracks of a movement divided between such strong conservative personalities as Mr. Paul, Mr. Cruz and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

“It seems like a broken record every four years: a number of conservatives run against one or two ‘moderates’ — apparently there’s no such thing as a liberal Republican — the conservatives cancel each other, and the ‘moderate’ ekes out a primary win,” lamented Media Research Center President L. Brent Bozell.

Pollsters see the same scenario in 2016 based on current data.

“The pattern in recent cycles suggests that the GOP will ultimately settle on a more ‘establishment’ candidate as a result of a continued split among conservatives,” pollster and campaign strategist Matt Towery said.

He will NEVER get my vote.

Its unfair to call Christie a “RINO”. RINOs have a core political philosophy - one I disagree with, but a core political philosophy nevertheless.

To look for a core political philosophy in Chris Christie, you need to look to Julies Caesar or Octavian. Its all about Christie and personal power. He will do anything to get it.

True, but Paul has little room to grow outside of his already established network. Anyone who might like Paul already does. Frankly, while I like him and would vote for him over any D any day of the week, I am not impressed with his intelligence and he’s shown a propensity to make a great statement and then get scared into backing down a day or two later.

I refuse to patronize any place that allows leftists to run amok but banishes right wingers like me for challenging them...

W.T. is just another RINO circular firing squad.

You can keep it... please do post what you can here though, I won’t go there.

Ignoring the base by the GOPe has proven to be a failed policy but they keep trying. I saw a Republican strategist on Fox going on and on about the IMPORTANT people Christie is meeting with..............not one word about the base!

Let’s see how this all works out...usually folks from good ol fly over country wouldnt have anything to do with a NE liberal.

I'm afraid that the GOPe is alienating the base on purpose -- all the better to elect the D candidate while appearing to put up a fight.

I will not vote for Christie. Period.

I’m in the same boat as you, maybe worse, since I once said I would vote for a burning bag of dog crap before I’d vote for Romney...

My opinion of Chris Christie can be summed up as follows: I would not perpendicularly traverse a linearly aligned conveyance route to micturate upon him were I to ascertain that he was rapidly combining with oxygen.

Pure garbage article, a Leftist wet dream.

A Christie vote would end the GOP totally.

know what I think we ought to do: have a complete tea party national convention to settle on an endorsed candidate before the primaries even begin.

I once liked Christie for his no nonsense dealing with the press, but he is just another typical RINO from the North East. I will not vote for him if he's the nominee.

Meanwhile, on yesterday’s CBS Sunday Morning, they did a whole puff piece on Christie.

For the most part, they made Christie sound like the best thing since sliced bread, except when the reporter-ette asked him, “Are you a bully?”

Of course, they always ask the democrats that same question when they interview THEM. (I don’t need a “sarc” tag, do I?)
