France was ready for Syria strike when Obama decided to seek Congress's approval

France was ready for a strike on chemical weapons facilities in Syria on the day US President Barack Obama decided to seek approval from Congress for the strike, French weekly Le Nouvel Observateur reported on Sunday.

According to the weekly, French President Francois Hollande called off the strike on August 31, after readying his military for the strike, and preparing to justify it to the French people and the world.

Rafale fighter jets, armed with Scalp cruise missiles with a range of 250 km, were ready to fire at targets in western Syria, including Damascus, the paper reported. The jets were to attack while flying over international waters in the Mediterranean, avoiding Turkish airspace to prevent Syrian retaliation against its neighbor.

French government officials had statements ready for when the strike starts, and the French intelligence had prepared a declassified report with evidence showing chemical weapons were used on August 21 in Damascus.

The strike was due to start at 3 a.m. on September 1, while everyone are asleep, to minimize civilian casualties, a government official told the paper.

After receiving indications from the Americans that the strike was imminent in the days leading up to the US president's announcement, Obama called Hollande on Saturday August 31 at 6:15 p.m., telling him he had decided to ask for Congress's approval before going ahead with the strike.

Hollande was stunned, the paper reported, and tried to convince Obama to reconsider, but was unsuccessful.

Typical French. They didn’t learn anything from watching Obama lead from behind in Libya.

How come a 13 year old can figure this out, but nations cannot?

I figured the war in Syria had come to an end - don’t see it covered much anymore. Guess that clown in the WH really shook them up. I can understand that - he does the same to us only for different reasons.

Sad day when the French were more ready to punish Syria for Gassing its own people than Obama. If Hillary was in charge—she would have done it—and gotten more allies on board for the attack. Where was Turkey? Italy? Germany? This event ripped away the mask of Obama as a great president—now he is seen for what he is—a great joke.

For France expecting/demanding that the USA go to war to keep their financial house of Rothchilds happy is like having a contemptuously coward for a friend. My granddaughter just returned from a month at a school in Paris and found Paris exciting. As far as I am concerned that is all France is capable of i.e. excitement.

Nothing impeachable here, he had 60 days to inform Congress. Which he successfully blew off in Libya. Just an easy way out of a mess he didn’t mean to get into in the first case. Deblustering Presidential bluster.

Imagine that, the Cheese-eating surrender monkeys taking a more aggressive posture than Obama’s effeminate America. Who could have dreamed this up? Not even DeGaulle...

Leaving the wisdom of the actions aside, that was the story of Libya too.

I don’t know France’s independent capabilities, I presume this was a planned joint action and Obama caused our forces to stand down as well. For France to act independently on hours notice absent what I can only presume was superior American force, I can see how that would be a problem for them.

I'm not endorsing the action, but yes, as CIC she would have made a decision, which really is the issue.

Nothing impeachable here

I believe that The Constitution lists "some" impeachable offenses, but I don't think impeachment is limited strictly to those. The commie bastard could be IMPEACHED and REMOVED for anything, and failing to abide by and enforce a duly enacted law [in this case the War Powers Act], certainly qualifies.

I guess that was part of my point. In order for us to stop being the world's police force, the rest of the western nations have to start stepping up to the plate, build up their own military forces so they don't have to rely on us everytime they want to project military power to advance their own national interests.

These same western powers that constantly criticize us for our military use, rely on that same military when they want their own national interests advanced. They can't have it both ways.
