Miriam Carey (right), is the woman identified in news reports as the suspect in a shooting incident that left Capitol Hill on lockdown for a brief period Thursday afternoon, and has now reportedly been shot dead by police. A woman with a one year old child unsuccessfully tried to ram her car through the security gates of the White House today. The police and Secret Service pursued the woman, and even though reports say she was not armed, she was eventually shot and killed outside the U.S. Capitol.
The driver has now been identified as 34 year old, Connecticut resident Miriam Carey, a dental hygienist working in Connecticut prisons. She reportedly has a history of mental health issues.
According to the New York Daily News,
Connecticut woman shot dead outside U.S. Capitol had history of mental health issues; police say there is no nexus to terrorismAfter attempting to ram the White House gate, Miriam Carey, 34, a dental hygienist who once lived in Brooklyn, led Secret Service and police on a pursuit toward the Capitol where she was gunned down. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Tex.), who said he was briefed by Homeland Security, said she did not appear armed. There was no return fire, he said.
There was horror on the Hill when a crazed Connecticut woman who tried to ram her way into the White House was shot and killed Thursday after she led police on a high-speed chase through the heart of Washington.
Two police officers were injured trying to stop Miriam Carey, but the year-old baby girl shed taken along on her death ride somehow survived, police said.
Now investigators are trying to determine why Carey, a 34-year-old dental hygienist from Stamford who once lived in Brooklyn, went on a tear.
New video has been released of the suspect being surrounded by police and then suddenly sped away. Shots can be heard as police take off after her.

I didn't see any action taken short of deadly fire except yelling and poimting guns.
My favorite:
“Sequester meant no recharging their tasers”
She ran over a cop. From then on it was suicide by cop. Sad but true.
Kudos to you, agree 100%. Mental health care truly sucks and in the best cases is difficult. I’ll pray for your child and you.
Cops are trained to deal with people who have mental illness. I’m not clear on the circumstances here, initially they said she was shooting people, then I heard it was the cops doing all the shooting. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
Tougher standards for drivers licenses.
She grazed a barricade? Are you serious? And they killed her?
??
Clearly she did freak out - - that's why she ended up dead.
She ran over a cop and demolished a police cruiser with an officer inside. The brotherhood protects brothers. Unfortunate.
I’ve been nice! There is no cause for you or me to escalate this! Understand?
Last I heard she didn't directly do the latter. Some cop wanting to get in on the chase did that himself.
I am not sure what happened here so I am going to wait for the media to get its story straight, and when the media tells its story I will know they are lying and understand what really happened.
As long as she was driving the car she was wielding a deadly weapon. After exiting the vehicle, if that's what she did, she was disarmed. Shooting her under those circumstances would not be in any way rightfully justifiable. Unless she was moving to reenter the vehicle or something, and they thought they had no way to stop her from doing so short of shooting her. That seems quite unlikely to me.
The entire House of Representatives, led by ‘rat Steny Hoyer, stood and cheered the capitol police for what they did to this woman - they must all be racists......
Then I stand corrected but she did run over an officer.
Weird. The attack of the killer dental hygienist. What are we coming to?
Congress, the President and the media are cases in point.
An unarmed black woman with a young child is gunned down in the streets of our nations capital by gun toting thugs. Where are Jesse and Al?

Unfortunately 1) Not all officers receive the full training (i.e., not part of the "CIT" ) and 2) People who call 911 are not aware they can specifically ask for CIT officers to respond if they have a problem with an ill family member. When I teach Family-to-Family I always tell people that, if their loved one gets violent due to t heir illness, to be sure to specifically ask for CIT-trained officers to respond. It always amazes me how many people had no clue CIT even exists. CIT is in cities all over the country, but not sure about DC.
I belive that she came up to a roadblock near the White House (a block or more away), and apparently in turning around was told to stop. She did not. She sped away, knocking own a stanchion in the process, and an officer who tried to stop her was injured.
A chase ensued. She was penned in at one point, but backed into a police car, turned and got away. At that point, several shots were fired at her by officers. In the continuing chase, a law enforcement vehicle wrecked.
Finally, her car came to a stop, on a divider as I understand it, and she was shot dead, being hit multiple times.
She never fired a shot, she was in fact unarmed.
The barricades around the White House have been moved much further out under Obama.
At this point, I believe this woman, who had a good education, a god job, and was not from DC, but from Connecticut, more than likely made a wrong turn, and then panicked when faced with armed officers. She was unarmed and had a one year-old in a car seat, I believe the officers grossly over-reacted. But I will wait for all of the facts to come out before final judgement.
Sadly, mental health treatment is not working for some. All the mass shootings were performed by the mentally ill. The problem is the mentally ill. People care and can’t help them because of stupid laws to prevent abuses in the past. More bad law unintended consequences.
