10/9/13 | Originalbuckeye

I just heard my Conservative radio hosts discussing what is being put on the table by the Republicans in the House. They said Ryan is pushing means testing for SS benefits.

$50,000 per year in Social Security?

From ssa.gov:

What is the maximum monthly Social Security retirement benefit?

The maximum benefit depends on the age you retire. For example, if you retire at your full retirement age in 2013, your maximum benefit would be $2,533. But if you retire at age 62 in 2013, your maximum benefit would be $1,923. If you retire at age 70 in 2013, your maximum benefit would be $3,350.

Agreed. And there are many SS recipients who EARN FAR MORE IN SS PAYMENTS THRU THEIR POST-RETIREMENT LIFE THAN THEY EVER PAID INTO IT!!! This is INSANITY! Send the old folks their checks, but when they reach the total amount they paid into it when working, STOP THE PAYMENTS.

Otherwise, the Social Security Administration will ALWAYS be in the red and never catch up. The death benefits to spouse is BS as well. STOP THAT TOO.

Let’s apply “Truth in Advertising” to the term “means testing.”

Means testing is nothing short of massive generational long robbery. Approved by the Government for the benefit of the Government. The means testing will occur after the fact not before. And it will occur near the retirement of the people the Government is robbing. The victims of the robbery are supposed to be thankful that they are being allowed to keep their saving.

IMHO 401Ks and other such programs will be looted by the Government long before the individuals reach retirement age. Don’t think is going to happen? Got news for you folks it is already happening in Europe - what makes you think it is going to stop at the water’s edge?

The BLUF is any social security program can not survive more than one generation after its inception. In the 1930’s the average life expectancy was the late 60’s - a few years after you became eligible for social security. A majority of the early payees didn’t reach 65. Now, almost three generations after it was established the average life expectancy is in the mid to late 70’s with a significant number of payees reaching their 90s. Plus, SS is paying for a lot more then just retirement. So, the supporting infrastructure - aka TAXES - for SS can not support its payments. What’s a Government to do?

The fact that SS retirement benefits can be subjected to income tax is ALREADY a form of “means” testing.

The extra tax collect from S/S payments does not go back into the S/S fund. Make all S/S non-taxable but pay less to folks with other large sources of income (don't means test assets).

That is horse&%it.

People paid into this system for years and have come to rely on it. You can means test a future generation who did not pay in, but you need to give them a date in the future when this would begin. To do this to people who have already paid into the system would be grossly unfair.

“are they going to penalize people who have actually saved for their retirements and reward people who haven’t?”

You betcha.

sorry my friend, but SS is a soviet-style welfare program instituted by the arch-socialist, FDR. it needs to be abolished if were are to preserve our liberty in this great republic

it is no accident that these relics of the “great society” such as SS, medicare (LBJ) and obamacare have been foisted on us by the crypo-communists in the demoRAT party

This will resolve itself. You may not have noticed (sarc) but the Fed is printing money as fast as it can go. Inflation will drive the value of the dollar down to the point where your SS check will buy a six pack of beer and a carton of cigarets withing five years or so.

See? easy

quite right. the FICA tax gives you no more “entitlement” to future SS benefits than paying income taxes does to a portion of the submarines bpurchased by the defense dept. SS is a pay-as-you-go system. the moron al gore wanted to create fictional “lock boxes” to ring fence SS benefits

one has no property rights in SS. it is just yet another scam foisted on us by the socialists like FDR and LBJ. the only solution is private accounts like a 401k

DIL HAD A MASCETOMY 2 WEEKS AGO, SHE WILL BE OFF WORK A YEAR UNTIL THE CHEMO AND ANOTHER 6 WEEK DRUG PROGRAM IS COMPLETED. HER ONCOLOGIST TOLD HER TO APPLY FOR TEMP SS DISABILITY AS SHE IS A CNA AT A NURSING HOME AND CANNOT BE AROUND ALL THOSE SICK PEOPLE UNTIL SHE IS DONE WITH THE CHEMO!! THEN IT IS DOUBT FULL SHE CAN PERFORM THE JOB AFTER THAT TIME PERIOD BECAUSE SHE WON’T BE ABLE TO LIFT. SHE IS JUST 47, A PATIENT KICKED HER IN THE BREAST, AND EXPLODED THE WALNUT SIZE TUMOR. WHAT IS SHE AND MY GRANDSON GOING TO DO FOR FOOD, SHELTER, ETC. She has a lousy $500 40lK they want her to cash in and they want her to sell her car. HOW IS SHE SUPPOSED TO GET TO HER CHEMO TREATMENTS WITH OUT A CAR? LIQUID ASSESTS.

It’s already means tested in that those who earn less get a disproportionately high benefit. If you earn the cap every year and therefore pay the absolute maximum in taxes you will get a certain payment. If you earn and pay half that amount you will get 75% of the benefits, or 1.5 times the proportionate amount. Who would invest in a retirement account where you put twice as much in but only got 33% more out?

I am not happy with this. I’ve been getting up and dragging my butt to work every day for the last 42 years. It’s come to the point where idiots like me are working so the other half of the country doesn’t have to. I’m planning to pack it in while the gettin’ is good. Not doing it any more.
