To Everyone in our Washington Redskins Nation:
As loyal fans, you deserve to know that everyone in the Washington Redskins organization -- our players, coaches and staff -- are truly privileged to represent this team and everything it stands for. We are relentlessly committed to our fans and to the sustained long-term success of this franchise.
Thats why I want to reach out to you --our fans -- about a topic I wish to address directly: the team name, Washington Redskins. While our focus is firmly on the playing field, it is important that you hear straight from me on this issue. As the owner of the Redskins and a lifelong fan of the team, here is what I believe and why I believe it.

Of course, since the PC Gestapo are on the case, facts are irrelevant.
I don’t remember the Kennedys ever going after the ‘Skins name issue way back when, Why now?
I guess the media mafia needs a new or rather old item to revisit to cover-up for their pitiful efforts on reporting current events nationwide.
It also just happens to be one of the most valuable brands in the world among sports franchises. No way is Snyder going to throw that away because of some PC nutjobs who for the most part aren’t even football fans.
As a Cowboys fan, the Redskins are per se evil. And I don’t generally care for Dan Snyder. However, in this case, I am 100% behind him and the Redskins.
Unfortunately, I had to go to the WaPo site to read the letter. Now I have to go take a shower.
In tribute to the whiners, they should change the name to The Washington Thinskins.
Do the Redskins get gov’t welfare?
“Brand” is right! It would be suicide to change. It would be like “McDonalds” changing their name to “Burger World”.
Dan writes a great letter pointing out the respect shown to Indians throughout their 8 decades.
Really hoping for “Beltway Baraqqis”
May I suggest the tried and true name “Washington Bullets.” What could go wrong?
I dont remember the Kennedys ever going after the Skins name issue way back when, Why now?”
Because, as leftists are so often heard saying, we’re a “more enlightened” country now. BTW, leftists in 2050 will view leftists in 2013 as odious. The standards keep changing with them.
What about dry Indians?
Moist Indians? What about the dry Indians?................
Yada yada yada SHOVE IT UP YOUR PC ASSES yada yada yada WE AIN’T CHANGING THE NAME.
This nonsense must stop. Colleges and even local High Schools are being pressured by the PC Nazis to change the generations loved mascot nicknames. The Sioux, Apaches, Seminoles for just a couple of samples. Consider...
With the corrupted history poorly taught in the government schools, the ONLY thing keeping alive the names of many Native American tribes is their being adopted over the years by school teams.
These names, chosen to claim for the teams, the bravery, courage, tenacity and very existence of the people here before Columbus showed up, will vanish from the language without these reminders.
Oh, should my RED Sox change their color, too?
What about the U.S. Army naming a war fighting helicopter the APACHE? Must they rename it the HECKAWES?
Better to be a brave Redskin than to be a weasel thin-skin.
The end game is to outlaw conservative free speech, if people accept the premise that offensive speech can be banned then the outcry will be that conservatives viewpoints are offensive and need to be banned as well.
—Oh, should my RED Sox change their color, too?—
Ironically, at the height of the Cold War, the Cincinnati Reds changed or reverted their names to Redlegs because it sounded less commie.
” Moist Indians? What about the dry Indians?................”
I hate this tablet’s automatic spell correction.......
It’s just liberals, being offended on behalf of people who aren’t offended. Yeah, some Oneidas are acting offended, but most aren’t and besides, I’ve sworn off buying any of their silverware, so there.
They’re fortunate we didn’t bring all of our old-world customs with us or they’d all have been wiped out a few centuries ago.
I was on a FB thread the other day where the folks in SD were still angry about Mt. Rushmore, but I told them, Hey, you’re getting your wish, the evil white man has been pushed out by the evil white/black man. I suggested they just get their friends in the Taliban to blow it up and they didn’t like that either. There’s just no pleasing some folks....
Better not use the word ‘Bigger’................
No such thing.
The strategy of the left is to create and pander to “victim” groups in order to expand their socialist army. Their actual ideas and goals are so odious that they don’t help attract people to their cause. So they keep their true intentions as quiet as they can. Instead they have to manufacture side issues like this in order to get donations and votes.
Probably came to them that "red" and "skin" could refer to potatoes, and potatoes remind them of an Irish Seven Course meal, and that plays to some forms of the addiction gene that most Kennedys apparently have.
I agree—a good way for kids to learn the names of Indian tribes, or be familiar with the terms, is through the sports teams—I was reading “Little House on the Prairie” last night to my 8 and 11 yr old kids and was stunned to learn that they had never heard the names “Comanche” or “Apache”—a little homeschooling on my part on Indian tribes is in order. . .
Good point. Ethnic societal, sometimes very subtle, differences do exist. Different folk have experienced calamity in many ways.. Including via food.. Especially the Irish.
Pass the wuudka.
Is the name Quisling taken?
Would Snyder please ask this question? How would changing the Redskins name improve the life of any Native Americans?
“Team Travon” would not only honor a brother, it would eulogize the thuggery that exists in professional sports.
You're talking 1960 to 1963. Civil rights for Indians were even a smoke signal on the horizon. The only Indians the public knew were Tonto, Geronimo, chief Crazy Horse, Hiawatha, Pocohontas, Squanto and maybe one or two others.
I'd like to suggest they be renamed "Foreskins" in honor of Sandra Fluck.
That was back when they didn’t like each other. My favorite was 1979, when Staubach threw three TD passes late in the 4th quarter in a comeback win on the last day of the season. The Cowboys won the division, and the Redskins were eliminated. After the game, Harvey Martin threw a funeral wreath into a dejected Redskins’ locker room.
If you’re bored, watch the game here:
Find, if you can, one of those old (pre-1975) National Geographic books on Indians. Try Amazon, e-Bay or garage sales. Back then, they still told the straight story.
Which is it?
I know what it is not, it's not about the symbols being “racist”, it's all about power and money.
If Washington's team was named “The rebels” with a Southern soldier waving a Confederate Battle flag instead of an “Native American” symbol, these same agitators would be crying racism still, only the symbol wouldn't be ridiculing but one of empowering.
Just as they did at Ole Miss with their Rebels and their southern gentleman mascot.
I quit paying attention to these leftwingnuts agitating attention whores and I wish organizations would see them for what they are.
Great letter. Keep the name, some people just need to F’n GROW UP!
I think I’ll pass on that video.
As for the point of the original post, I find the “Cowboys” to be very offensive.
BTW, was that the game that Drew Pearson made that “behind the back” catch ?
Don’t think it was that game. He made some good catches in his day. My favorite Cowboy, even if he was named after a communist columnist.
They could change their logo to a redskin potato and call themselves the “Spuds”!
Breaking: Obama agrees to compromise. He prefers Foreskins.
To be fair.
Dallas has owned the Redskins over the years.
Washington is probably viewed like a troublesome gnat that just won’t go away.
From my prospective as a lifelong Redskins fan, anytime the Cowboys are defeated, I’m happy.
I give the Cowboys a ton of credit for what they have been able to achieve over the years.
Football is not what it used to be.
Winning and the love of the game has been lost to the money and showboats.
How about we all write Gov. O’Malley,D-MD and demand that the Black-Eyed Susan be removed as the State flower?
Tom Clancy RIP, but that kind of reminds me of the plot in Sum of all Fears ... the book by Clancy not the PC crap movie that was made where they were scared to piss off either the Indian or the Muslim thought police.
I may have posted to this thread,...to lazy to look it up...
The Washington Redskins should rename the team to the Washington Foreskins because there are a bunch of Richard craniums in the district.
