Most of the talk on the cable gab festivals regarding shutdown mania has focused on the interplay between House Speaker John Boehner and the President. And rightly so, since all spending bills really are supposed to originate in the House. (Of course, there are little tricks they can use in the Senate to get around inconvenient facts like the Constitution.) But the upper chamber began making noises about taking matters into their own hands this week.
Its been clear to me for a while we cant wait for the House to save us, said Richard Durbin of Illinois, the second-ranking Senate Democrat. We have to find our own bipartisan path forward, and we havent done that yet.
The emerging Senate talks have been focusing on a plan from Republican Susan Collins of Maine and Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia, which faces obstacles in both parties and both chambers of Congress.
Today, they decided to take it for a test spin. A fresh proposal to extend the debt cap at least for a little while was brought to the floor. So how did that work out for ya?
Democratic leaders in the Senate are rejecting an offer by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) to end the budget impasse, arguing it asks for too much in return for too little, senators and aides tell POLITICO.
The development comes on the same day that the Senate voted 53-45 to block a Democratic bill that would raise the debt ceiling through 2014 without any spending cuts or changes to Obamacare.
So basically there arent sixty votes out there to end debate on anything which involves essentially a blank check for the federal government. It makes you wonder if they could pull this off even if the House did manage to put a similar package together. The current projection were hearing from the Hill holds that the witching hour is going to arrive on Thursday. At that point, choices will have to be made as to what gets paid and what doesnt. The chief danger here is that the GOP will have virtually nothing to say about those decisions. The White House will have direct control over which checks get written and you dont need a magic eight-ball to predict where the pain will be equally distributed if it comes to that.
But is there some way around it at this late date which is politically viable and could attract the required votes? I certainly dont see one.
Even Susan Collins is too extreme for them. (She's the new right wing radical)
Video of Patriots storming the Barricades today!!!

Looks like obama/soetoro has told his goons it`s ‘ ALL or NOTHING’ and won`t flinch even if there is no new debt increase or budget deal.
.
I think obama/soeotor thinks he will win back the House by inflicting chaos and pain and blaming it all on the GOP.
.
Bring it on !!!!
So where were the guards?
Interesting.
That means about 10 Democrats voted “No” on a Democrat bill.
I'll guess that ALL 10 are up for reelection in 2014!
Last week...
Harry Reid (To Susan): “Hey baby, wanna be a star?”
Today...
Harry Reid (to secrertary): “I told you- no calls from Susan!”
What a perfect ‘dumb slut’ LOL!
I was trying to figure out how Harry Reid could let that happen....
Now it is becoming apparent that the Senate is the REAL PROBLEM!
Probably in hiding. They weren’t programmed beyond placing the Barricades and tape.
Double check your math.
No, they’ve got 54 seats (2 are technically ‘independent’ but they belong to Harry).
One was probably just out stealing WIC vouchers from poor mothers at the time.
Susan Collins is a fool. Spoke to her offices a few times and she hasn’t a leg to stand on in any way. Lack of opinion combined with RINO power hunger.
53 Dems voted for it. It needed 60 votes to pass. If they really wanted it they would of dropped the 60 vote threshold and passed it with 51 votes.
But this can’t be. Isn’t Susan one of those enlightened moderate Republicans, who will roll up their sleeves and help the Democrats pass socialism?
Re: “53 Dems voted for it.”
So, Senator Collins did not vote for her own bill?
Re: “It needed 60 votes to pass.”
Democrats start with 57 votes including Collins.
They couldn't find 3 more RINO’s to put them over the top?
That sounds really strange.
Nah, the 53 votes were to consider Harry Reid’s own debt limit bill- which vote required 60 ayes to win.
Susan’s was killed by Harry before it ever came up.
It needed 60 yes votes to then move to a final vote which would only need a simple majority to pass. Basically, all the rats and the 2 independents voted ‘yes’ and all the GOP (including Collins) voted ‘no’. Harry Reid, for procedural reasons (so he could bring the bill up again in the future) switched his yes vote to no.
#16 is correct. If it got 60 yes it would have passed. No other votes needed.
Yep, Cap’n Ahab is going for the white whale.
Thanks for clearing that up.
