Karen Santoro heard co-workers chattering about her psychological care in 2010.
An Air Force veteran and surgical services scheduler at the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh hospital in Oakland, Santoro asked officials with the VA and the Department of Health and Human Services to investigate the source of the gossip. It seemed to violate the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, that prohibits release of medical information.

A two-month Tribune-Review investigation found VA workers or contractors committed 14,215 privacy violations at 167 facilities from 2010 through May 31, victimizing at least 101,018 veterans and 551 VA employees. Photos of the anatomy of some were posted on social media; stolen IDs of others were used to make fraudulent credit cards.

Eleven times since 2010, criminal investigators found VA employees in Massachusetts, Ohio, Virginia, Florida and Washington stealing veterans' identities or prescriptions. The outcome of those cases is unknown because VA privacy officers decided the outcomes should be private.
In 2012, a medical clerk in Miami was sentenced to two years in prison for selling undercover agents data belonging to 22 veterans. The employee confessed to stealing the identities of 3,000 vets over five years before a credit card fraud scheme fell apart.
A VA patient service assistant in Muskogee, Okla., snapped a photo of an ailing veteran's exposed buttocks in 2011 and then, for reasons unknown, posted the picture on Facebook. Hers is not an isolated incident: At least 15 times over the past three years, VA workers put images of sick vets or revealed patients' health information on social media for pals to see.

In a private hospital system if you are caught looking at a file you have no business looking at you are gone in a twinkling.
Ping.
Nothing like massive data breaches to keep our veterans from seeking care.
They make ‘paranoia’ sound like a dirty word but...
Just enough to make you paranoid.

(Massive) Privacy Breaches in VA Health Records .... and wounds Veterans all over again.
"If the government will do this to veterans, imagine what they will do to the rest of us once they control all our healthcare records."
Thanks, Jet Jaguar.
And that's why it's infuriating when I hear top Republicans parrot the words ‘Repeal obamacare? It's not gonna happen’. I hear Congressmen on morning talk radio say the exact thing - ...not gonna happen.
This monstrosity is not only devastating to the medical system but a travesty to privacy. And too many are unbelievably cavalier about ACA going full throttle.
There are three major VA hospitals in OH: Cincinnati, Chilicothe, and Dayton.
I wonder which one was stung?
Another example of Gen. Shinseki’s complete incompetence.
When is he going to jail?
If they wanted to keep their health records private, then they should have stored them with Obamas birth certificate and college records.
The people “trusted” to protect our privacy are the Acorn community organizers, SEIU, LA Raza (the race) occupy types and just about every sleazy Obama supporting bunch of feral humans.
What could go wrong?
Bet their private information is secure though.

Perhaps he can pass out Chinese made berets to all VA employees, and everything will be better?
This is disgusting.
Simply the prelude to “oBamsterKare: The Opera”
Once you provide this government with your private information, once you register on Health-care.gov, once you sign up for Obamacare, YOU will NEVER be able to retrieve your personal information back from this out of control government again! Even if the law is repealed, your private information will have already been shared with all law enforcement, both State and Federal, including the out of control IRS, FBI, ATFE, Homeland Security, just to name a few!
Just after 9-11 the federal government spent billions setting up “intelligence hubs” also known as: “fusion hubs” in every State where your private information would be dumped, e.g. State of Michigan's Intelligence Operations Center is found at: http://michigan.gov/mioc and what started out as a fusion center for preventing another terror attack on this Country, has now mission creep into a law enforcement intelligence gold mine for the “health, safety, and welfare” of the people! Without a search warrant, any law enforcement agency, or corporate business can access your private information, including your personal health records! This is one of the first parts of the law in Obamacare that required every Doctor, Hospital, and health provider to place your medical records electronically on-line!
Unless we begin to stop going along with this out of control government as Americans, we will never roll this socialist Nazi government and its spying on Americans back without first a very bloody civil war.
Stay strong my fellow Americans, we can win this fight, failure is not an option, we, as Americans do not lose, it is in our DNA, all we have to do is be willing to stand up and fight! Thank God for our veterans, Patriots like Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and Rand Paul who are fighting every day for our God given rights and to bring this out of control government back under the US Constitution and the American people where it belongs.
This did not happen over night, we will not win the fight over night either, but, we can and will win battles that must take place all across this Nation in order to win the war against these liberal socialist Nazi's who have infected out Nations government and are waging a war against Patriotic Americans every where@!
Stay safe and God bless!
Just wait until thousands of low-level “navigators” and others get access to everyone’s Obamacare data.
