EBT system failure blocks food stamp debit cards
WLS - Chicago ^ | October 12, 2013 | By Eric Horng

Full carts abandoned at Chicago grocery stores were a common sight as shoppers in Illinois and many other states have been unable to use their food stamp debit cards.

More than two million people in Illinois use a so-called Link Card. That's one in six residents in the state. So when suddenly the system went down Saturday morning many customers just walked out of the store.

"Now I'm going to have to unfortunately do the fast food thing now. No cooking tonight," said Link Card user Rob Lee.

"That's how people starve," said shopper Sean Wright. "People starve if they don't have the Link to feed their children, to feed their family with."

VerySadAmerican: “1 out of 6 people in Illinois is on food stamps.”

Ah, the great communist state of Illinois. The poverty and dependency have metastasized like a cancer. It’s another progressive success story!

Erie Times website reported today that 37% of the people in Erie County, PA are SNAP card users. Let me repeat that...

Yes, especially if there are frozen things in it.

Erie County PA is not the place to be when the entitlement zombies riot.

Shockingly (not really) Obama won Erie County by 20% in 2008

I'd be cautious buying fresh meats, etc the next few days.

Very wise tip, thanks...

It makes a ridiculous quantity of food compared to three McDoubles.

Tuna Helper : $2.50 for two meals packs

StarKist Tuna 4-pack: $2.88

Hamburger Helper: $2.70 for two meal packs

1 Lb. Ground beef: $3.70

I thought the same. We’re almost half through the month. Presumably this isn’t her first shopping trip this month since getting Oct. benefits. A certain percentage of my groceries are always stock-up staples-rice, flour, powdered milk, canned food, pasta, etc., things you can put a meal together with in an emergency. This is a good plan in case of snowstorms, illness, etc. for example here we may be having a grocery workers strike a d Ive decided not to cross the picket line, so Ive been stocking up. I also happen to have a lot of homemade soup and stuff in the freezer which would come in handy.
These were some of the same people who I suspect had so many travails during Hurricane Katrina, and for some of the same reasons.
I do t know if stories of riots are true but if so, it shows that not that much s**t really needs to hit the fan before things unravel.

If they have the cash for fast food, they have enough for a few meals’ worth of groceries. $20 can buy a lot of food if you know how to shop.

37%! Wow! I wonder which county and city in the country have the highest percentage on welfare.

I just bought 30 pounds of fresh white fish that was gutted, deboned, and skinned for $45 tonight. Vacuumed sealed it with my daughter and froze it. These people just don't know how to shop because their food is free.

Oh and it cost another $1.5 for the 26 vacuum bags.

It amazes me how unprepared a lot of people are in the groceries/cooking department. I have plenty of food not only for an emergency, but because I buy ahead on things that are on sale.

It would suck if I went to the grocery store and couldn’t pick up fresh things like milk, fruit, or vegetables.....but I sure wouldn’t be going hungry for a good long while.

I can get the ingredients for 5 servings of spaghetti for less than $15, chicken leg quarters are usually less than $1.50 each, pork chops are dirt cheap, and side ribs usually run less than $2/serving. I could eat steak every night and still spend less than someone eating at McD’s.

All I can say to this is:

This is what big government looks like. It isn’t going to get any better.

So right... Might not LIKE ramen noodles, but they'll keep your belly from growling.

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day.

Forget all about teaching people to fish. It just isn’t happening

Any hiccup in the free fish delivery program, and they’ll burn down the lake.

I had the wind knocked outta me financially last year and my "stock" kept me afloat for a while. I didn't like how much I depleted myself, but it served its purpose. I learned from that experience and have since re-built my stock from my learning. You are right, some things we have to go without, but feeling a bit of pain tends to make the more intelligent among us learn to plan better.

I'm at about four, maybe five months if I conserve heavily on my stock, in a total "shelter in place" scenario (i.e., I won't have to leave my property at all). Still, I feel un-easy and am looking for every little bit I can plan for.

Coupled with 34 states having "computer glitches" with zero-care and now 17 (hmm..half of 34? ironic I guess) with ebt computer problems; color me skeptical about what is going on here.
