"We call this the backyard bunker," Hubbard said as he showed us one of his survival shelters.
These days, the fear market is booming.
"I can't build them fast enough right now," he said. "It's better to have a shelter 10 years early than five minutes late."
But unlike those Cold War-era concrete bunkers with just the basics, these survival shelters come fully loaded.
"It's got everything a house does," Hubbard said. "It's just 20-feet underground. Luxury bedrooms, big screen TVs , game room, underground pool. You can have anything you want." He's even seen people put Jacuzzis in them.....

ya all need to look up SODIS. it shows you how to purify water using only a small plastic bottle and the sun. after two yrs if prepping this is truly the most useful thing i have learned. (if it works). trying it out next weekend.

Seriously though, when a gov't becomes oppressive, the citizens don't resist the invaders.
Good example was when the Moslems conquered Egypt in the 600s. The Egyptians were Monophysite Christians and felt oppressed by the Orthodox Eastern Roman Empire, so the Egyptians didn't put up much resistance to the Moslem invasion.
There is the hard core reality of when the SHTF that you clearly understand.
Energy waste is a side show.
Communication will be paramount.
Security will be the first order of business.
Trust, a close second.
Self sufficiency doesn’t reverse the conditions that will have put us in this situation.
But it will be a requirement.
The capture of the airwaves, or pirate broadcasts will provide hope.
Standing your ground in the middle of nowhere is not where the battles will occur.
Shooting looters may seem satisfactory, but shooting government troops is a whole different story.
BTW, that EMP, how long does that last ?

I’m not sure where people are building these shelters, but a community of like-minded, well prepared people of app. 1000-2000 is the best means of survival and defense.
Hiding your family in a shelter by yourself...I don’t think that will last long.
Regarding your last question, I’m not sure if that was rhetorical or if you were asking for stats, so I’ll answer as best as I can.
The actual pulse is over in moments. IF an EMP fries all solid-state microcircuitry and computers, those things are fried for good, until they are repaired or replaced. That could take a long time to get the essentials up and running again (electricity, computer-controlled national defense, communications, etc.).
The issue I have not been able to resolve after tracking this issue for some years, is what the realistic effect will be. I’ve read reports that state that the best EMP will only cause modern, computer-controlled cars a flicker of the instrument panel but that they will run fine and most won’t even stall. Some vehicles may stall but will restart. I’ve read other reports that state a full-on grid meltdown will occur.
To be perfectly honest, I don’t know the answer. I suspect that the effect will be based on a lot of variables and that no one really knows the full impact.
I think it is smart to have a bug-out vehicle (1972 or earlier truck or SUV or a diesel truck up to about 1985 if it is a manual transmission) and to store your sensitive electronics in small, portable Faraday cages.
Everything we’re talking about is survival if and when the entire grid and all computers are fried.
If that happens, we will be back in the dark ages overnight and we’ll need all our resources to survive.

Another tip is to purchase a small, cheap laptop with a couple of extra backup batteries.
Load maps on it and any other survival documentation and instructions you may need. You can also throw in a few “thumb drives” loaded with information.
To keep the laptop running, of course, you’ll need a means of supplying power (either generator or solar) and/or of recharging the batteries. I’m looking into a solar system for recharging AA and D cell batteries as well as a PC and the rechargeable batteries on the two-way radios. I haven’t found one that is reasonable and that I’m confident will keep the batteries charged cheaply, reliably, and efficiently.

EMP lasts a small fraction of a second, but the electronics will in most cases stay fried forever. [To check, disconnect from the battery for a little while, a few seconds should be all it takes but I would go with a minute or more, then reconnect. Anything that is ever coming back will come back when reconnected to good batteries after a moment with no power and enough time for capacitors to discharge.]
Yeah..but..uh......who is going to fuel the generator and keep it from being stolen?
