The Federal Takeover of Catholic Education

Catholic students

As teachers throughout the country introduced the new Common Core curriculum—the federal standards for mathematics and English Language Arts—in their classrooms this fall, most parents had no idea this radical change in their children’s education was coming. Some might have noticed over the past month that there were dramatic changes in the textbooks and tests that their children were bringing home. Others may have noticed that in language arts, their children are now being introduced to some very different kinds of books—texts with more emphasis on technical or informational material, and less emphasis on classical literature. It would be difficult not to notice, as the Common Core curriculum is a dramatic change in the ways in which education is being delivered. Yet, few parents, and even fewer elected political representatives, knew this was coming.

A recent poll by Phi Delta Kappa International and Gallup revealed that 62 percent of the population has never heard about the Common Core curriculum. Now that they are finally finding out about what can only be called a federal takeover of public education, it may be too late. The curriculum has been created, the books have been purchased, and the standards have been implemented. Assessment testing has already begun. Many are asking how something like this could happen without parental and local input. Others are wondering how education could have become federalized when there are already laws in place to prevent just such federal intervention?

The answer is that it was a stealthy appropriation by the federal government to take control of the curriculum in the local public schools—and now, in some private schools also. The federal takeover involved no parental input, and very little involvement by elected representatives. It had to be done covertly because there are indeed laws protecting states against unwanted federal intrusion into the educational curriculum of local school districts. The General Education Provisions Act, the Department of Education Organization Act, and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act all protect states against intrusion by the United States Department of Education. The problem is that the “intrusion” has not been entirely “unwanted” by state political leaders—especially the governors of each state. Enlisting the state governors as allies in the creation of the curriculum through the National Governor’s Association, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation used the lure of more than $150 million in grant money—and the promise of future federal funds—to convince the leaders of budget-strapped states to support the federal standards.

Working collaboratively with the Obama administration, the Gates Foundation helped to subsidize the creation of a national curriculum that has now been adopted by 46 states and the District of Columbia. Endowing the creation of the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has committed an additional $76 million to support teachers in implementing the Common Core—a standardized national curriculum. This, on top of the more than 100 million they have already awarded to the National Governor’s Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers to develop the Common Core in the first place.

Although the Common Core was designed to address problems in the public schools, many Catholic schools have decided to adopt the Common Core standards also. Eager to share in the largesse of the Gates Foundation, and the promise of future federal funds, Catholic school superintendents from more than 100 Catholic dioceses across the nation have embraced the federal education standards. According to the National Catholic Register, the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA), while not formally endorsing the Common Core, has been holding workshops on how to implement the standards in Catholic schools.

Many parents of these Catholic school children are unhappy with the implementation of federal guidelines in their Catholic schools. Catholic parents groups are emerging throughout the country to try and fight against the continued implementation of the Common Core. New Jersey parents have banded together to address the problems they see with the common core, and Pittsburgh Catholics Against the Common Core have organized to protest the implementation of the federal standards in their children’s Catholic schools. The National Catholic Register published comments from Ann Hynds, one of the members of the Pittsburgh parents’ group, who declared that “Catholic parents are so angry … we are the primary educators of our children, and we are being told not to worry, that they know better.”

These angry sentiments are echoed by many other concerned parents. Most have said that they believe the Common Core will be detrimental to Catholic education—as Hynds said “Catholic educators all say how excellent Catholic education has always been.… So why are they doing this?”

That is a good question. While it is understandable that the governors were empowered to make the decision in collaboration with their school superintendents, it is less clear how Catholic school superintendents were empowered to make the decision about Common Core unilaterally. Many parents are asking whether their bishops were involved in the decision to implement the federal curriculum.

Still, there are many dioceses that have refused to implement the Common Core. Richard Thompson, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Denver Archdiocese has refused to allow the Common Core in the Catholic schools there. In a published interview in the National Catholic Register, Thompson said that he saw no need to install the federal standards in the Catholic schools in Denver because the schools are already “exceeding most of Common Core standards. We’re already there and more.”

Indeed, this is a major concern for Catholic school parents. One of the reasons that many of these parents sent their children to Catholic schools was because of the academic rigor that was missing in the public schools. In a critical op-ed published in the Wall Street Journal by Jamie Gass and Charles Chieppo, we learn that Stanford University emeritus mathematics professor James Milgram, the only academic mathematician on the Common Core’s validation committee, refused to sign onto the final draft. Milgram described the Common Core standards as having “extremely serious failings” and reflecting “very low expectations.” Reflecting these concerns, Phyllis Schlafly, President of the Eagle Forum wrote a letter to the Catholic bishops warning them that in the Common Core, “conceptual math has replaced fundamentals,” and “Euclidian geometry was displaced.” She also asserted that in language arts, students are forced to read texts “in a vacuum” without contextual information, and lamented the reductions in classical literature that accompanied the Common Core.

Parents are worried. So concerned about the negative response to the Common Core from parents of Catholic school children that Father Peter Stravinskas, executive director of the Catholic Education Foundation, has scheduled a conference titled “Catholic Concerns About the Common Core” in Elberon, New Jersey next month (at the Stella Maris Retreat Center on November 5-6). The National Association of Private Catholic and Independent Schools will co-host the event with the schools office of the Diocese of Gaylord, Michigan, and the superintendent of high schools of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Father Stravinskas has warned that since the SATs and other standardized tests will be geared to the Common Core, Catholic schools need to pay attention to the federalized standards.

Education policy expert, Diane Ravitch appears to agree with Father Stravinskas about the standardized testing issues. Ravitch pointed out that since David Coleman, the primary architect of the Common Core standards has become president of the College Board, “we can expect that SAT will be aligned to the standards. No one will escape their reach, whether they attend public or private school.” Even homeschooled children will be vulnerable to the federalization of public education standards.

It is possible that some school districts—especially those in economically deprived areas—will benefit from the federal intervention in their local schools. But, it is difficult to see how inviting the federal government into our Catholic schools to help create a new curriculum can make things better.

According to Vickie McKenna (WIBA), the standardized tests (SAT,ACT) will be geared to Common Core also. We are home schooling. Heck with the standardized tests.

Common Core has only one goal no matter how they dress it up, and that is to prepare your children to accept the Marxist paradise when it is offered to them.

If they can successfully dumb down a child so that he no longer has the ability to think for himself, then they will have succeeded.

Just get an SAT/ACT test-prep program when the student is ready to prepare for the test. It’s wise to do this no matter what, since no high school math curriculum exactly matches what is tested.

The government started the take-over with Vision 2000, the Catholic school version of Goals 2000. At the time, I tried to persuade my kids’ principal (K-8) not to participate but she told me the Arch Diocese was instituting it. Their school was also teaching sex ed from the Michigan Model - a truly insidious piece of garbage that parents had fought in the public schools since some time in the 80’s. The Michigan Model was so bad that my friend would not mail copies of it to me because she was afraid she could be arrested for sending pornography through the U.S. mail - an elementary school curriculum!!!!! I thought my kids were safe in this school because it was run by a very conservative order, the Felicians, but apparently they were not.

Online curriculum will be the method used to transform the individual to the COMMON CORE, Global non-Christian citizen. There is no opportunity to 'review' the curriculum as in the past. Even Assessment scores will have little meaning to parents but will give valuable data points that determine "What your child needs to know and be able to do" in order to function in their global commune they are building.

ANY government money that is accepted = control.

I am reading “Sex Education: The Final Plague”. It is about the corruption of “education” with “Sex Ed” a construct by Atheists/Cultural Marxists like Lukacs-—to corrupt and destroy the innocence of childhood—which will destroy the normal sexual identity formation in children and destroy Virtue. (Removing Virtue in children/adults—will collapse cultures—like Lukacs did in Hungary). It is why TV should be eliminated from your child’s life.

This book gives dates and curricula and notes who and when Sex Ed was slipped into CATHOLIC SCHOOL which was totally corrupted with “Sex Ed” (thoroughly ANTI-CATHOLIC) by 1970 (after Vatican II) sex ed was inserted into all Catholic schools to corrupt and disturb normal Catholic moral formation -—and it “started” in the mid-40’s-—this slipping in “sex ed” to disturb moral formation of children. (Psychologists were used to infuse the curricula with psychosexual results (Dewey was a socialist and they targeted Virtue and the Natural Family-—to collapse culture. They knew to collapse Virtue—they destroy Christianity and the Family).

Sex ED in groups/schools ALWAYS undermines the dignity/privacy/intimacy of the sex act and the maturity of the individual and removes morality from sex—and respect. It forces girls and boys to be embarrassed, humiliated and targets of teasing. Mystery and Awe are essential for the respect of the opposite sex in younger years. Without it, sex is reduced to sex organs—and children do not like “differences” by nature. Passions are powerful and ignited at a unnatural age (latency) and normal activities are curtailed (intellectual/critical thinking).

Maturity is essential for real appreciation of “the Other”—true diversity. It is the natural “herd instinct” and desire to belong to a group. Schools (institutions) are unnatural/artificial way to “educate”-—it is really just a system for mass indoctrination/”group think”-—a Prussian system put in by Mann and totally corrupted by removal of Objective Truth (Constitution) by John Dewey in the 30’s.

Christians always knew for thousands of years that the innocence of children is dire in their formation-—that childhood traumas always warp and disturb their normal formation——and fixates them in immature ages. They didn’t understand the psychology of Wundt or Pavlov or Skinner but they did understand that exposing young children to Paganism/crude sexual behavior will have a profound effect on their adulthood. They were correct. Rousseau—the Proto-Marxist—explained the necessity for sexual innocence so the critical area of the brain could be maximized—although again—they didn’t know the underlying psychology.

Common Core removes ALL Classical Education—which is the only “way” to truly educate. Without understanding ideas throughout the ages, children are reduced to third world countries of people who do not have a written language. They will be trained like a dog and sexualized (Miley Cyrus) to do work for the corporations and/or State-—they will be “happy” amoral slaves-—the object of Marxism-—to remove Knowledge and Wisdom (Classical Ideas) and morality and the ability to use Reason (Aristotle/Plato/St. Thomas A/Catholicism/Natural Law (Science, Reason). Christians (because of Natural Law/Reason infused by Catholic Debate (Platonism) for thousands of years and the discovery of St. Thomas in the Scholastic Era) that Classic Education-—created the Age of Reason/the Renaissance/Excellence.

This removal of Virtue (Excellence) makes people complacent with mediocrity—with being controlled in every aspect and begging the State for tidbits.

I understand that. However, to modify your homeschool teaching to get a good score on the SAT or ACT is putting the cart before the horse. A bright kid with a good homeschool education should do well enough on a revised test, perhaps even better. In any event, the small fries who will be most affected by these changes (if they are subjected to them) will be looking at a much different landscape for colleges than what we have had for only the last 50-60 years or so.

I’m sure they’ll have SAT prepbooks with the Common Core stuff so those who were homeschooled or went to private school can see what is expected. Some of the Common Core stuff is out and out false, so I’ve been told.

This article is misleading.

There is nothing forcing a diocese to adopt Common Core if your private Catholic school is not taking Federal or State money.

Some Catholic schools are adopting bits and pieces of it because they are afraid that they will produce students who are behind public school students academically if they don’t. Religious instruction does not have to suffer because of this.

It’s up to you and your private Catholic school as to how Common Core is implemented. There is no blaming the federal gov’t over this one. You need to be an active parent in your child’s education.

Great, great post.

It comes to my mind that Catholic education is rather laid out already. Catholics either comply with Ephesians 6, or comply with the oppressive standards and testing traps of the Evil One.

We enable destruction if and when we cave, comply, and cooperate with evil, even in measured steps.

God promises that as evil increases, His grace is increased.

To even hope that these children of ours survive the coming battles, unto Heaven, they need armor, not diluted Catholic curriculum arranged to please the world, by means of the Common Core and SAT standards.

May God be pleased to assist us and have Mercy on our children.

Go to 'deutsch29.wordpress.com' Mercedes Schneider writes about Common Core 10/10/2013 post lists who the movers and shakers of CC are. Her following 5 posts widens the picture. This is a huge International, Global plan. Prepare yourself for the scope of the control. You will see the PROFIT motive that drives much of the CC. The individuals values, beliefs and worldview must be conformed to the commune aka COMMON CORE.

Take care of your own children first. Homeschool if you can but choose curriculum very carefully so as to avoid ANY Government money which will bind you to their system.

Assessments are the key to control. Assessments rate the value of a product, in this case children, to the system.

Charlotte Iserbyt has a new smaller print version of her book, "The Deliberate Dumbing down of America". Available at Amazon. The original is a free download and it is HUGE in content. Remember that the key word in the title is DELIBERATE.

It all gets down to the Truth (God). Our children are being fed Lies. The Catholic Church was always about promoting the Truth and Saving Souls. Now it purposely BLURS the Truth-—blurs Good and Evil, so children are confused and not morally formed into strong, resilient moral people. Trusting parents have fallen for allowing strangers to do what they are called by God to do-—educate their own children. Schools used to reinforce parents-—but with the Marxist curricula (Common core and Sex Ed) it undermines parents-—divides and creates amoral children raised in artificial environments, who will rebel against God/parents/Christianity and adopt materialism/Satanism.

Since Vatican II (Smoke of Satan) and prior-—Pope Pius X’s encyclical Pascendi warns Catholics of the infiltration inside the Catholic Church to twist the Truth——and the book in my above post, documents the evil people responsible for implementing “Sex Ed” in the Catholic schools in direct defiance of many popes because of the undermining of the family (parent’s authority) and morality formation. These people/priests supported SIECUS, were actually members of evil organizations, and supported evil nihilism/Marxism.

We have to protect our children and always promote Truth. We need to protect innocence and Sex Ed is never a “classroom” topic-—it removes the dignity and privacy and respect for the Sex Act. Removes morality from it.

The Catholic Schools are being destroyed from within....these “priests” or laity who formed the new “curricula” are pro-abortion, pro-homosexual, pro-Satan. They are insidiously evil.

Give bill gates money and he uses to to indoctrinate our kids, in the name of benevolence but the cause of leftist political organization such is the nature of all Liberal “charities”/”non-profits” oddly enough.

Let the money run out and demand our states institute strict rules on content of reading to include Founding documents & constitutional ideas. The foundation theory’s of John Locke should be given top priority.

Any student that doesn’t learn theses basic concepts should be judged delinquent and a potential threat to his peers. You either know enough to respect the rights of your countrymen or you don’t.
