Evarz Claymont Steel mill suspending operations (Delaware)

Nearly 400 workers at the Evraz Steel mill in Claymont will be out of work come December.

Evraz announced this morning it is suspending operations at its Delaware facility due to “subdued market demand and the high volume of imports.”

The company says its 375 workers in Claymont will finish processing and shipping existing products over the next two months, then prepare the mill for idling. A small crew will remain to maintain the site.

“We appreciate our employees’ efforts to operate Evraz Claymont as efficiently as possible,” said the company’s Executive Vice President for Flat Products and Recycling John Zanieski in a statement. “Unfortunately, market conditions continue to be challenging and low market visibility makes it difficult to foresee when positive changes will occur.”

“Market demand is down because unfairly-traded imports have flooded the flat products (steel plate) market,” Evraz Senior Communications Manager Melodie Ruse told WDDE in an email. “In addition, we supply the infrastructure and construction markets, and neither have been as robust as we would have hoped by this point.”

Customers served by the Claymont mill will be handled by Evraz facilities in Portland, Oregon, and Regina, Saskatchewan after Claymont shuts down in December. An Evraz spokesperson tells WDDE that those facilities are larger and have a lower cost to operate.

Evraz officials add that the company will consider restarting operations if market conditions improve and it is working with Gov. Jack Markell’s office to evaluate options for resuming operations.

“We value the support we have received from the Governor, the state of Delaware and the community of Claymont over the years and appreciate their continued support during this challenging time,” said Zanieski in the company’s statement.

A spokesperson for Gov. Markell issued a statement saying the governor is “disappointed” by the news and was told the facility is losing money as it seeks to compete with imports from China.

The Governor and DEDO will continue to work with Evraz to seek every opportunity to get the plant fully operational again,” said Communications Diector Cathy Rossi in a statement. “In the meantime, our thoughts are with the employees and their families at this difficult time.”

The Governor’s office estimates 200 of the 375 affected workers are Delaware residents.

The plant makes steel plate and custom plate products for industrial customers. It was purchased in 2008 by Evraz North America. The company previously announced it was laying off 60 workers last April, shortly after unveiling a new pollution control system in March.

A lot of the imported flat stock is just junk. I’ve had several plates delaminate because a 1/4” plate was just 2 1/8” plates sandwiched together. The stuff was impossible to use and a lot of it was sent back to the jobber.

This is impossible. The Democrats are focused like a laser beam on helping to create private sector jobs! The Democrats are so busy creating jobs that they don’t even have time to close down war memorials or stuff like that.

Private sector jobs CREATE tax money. Government jobs CONSUME tax money. The Democrats just can’t quite understand this.

It’s not that they don’t ‘understand’ it, it’s that they don’t believe it.

Whenever I tell people that government employees don’t pay taxes, people look at me like my head was upside down.................

A closed steel mill joins a closed auto plant and another auto plant converted to UD research. Way to go, RATs! More union workers out of a job - and just in time for Christmas.

Obama himself actually said that more government jobs would result in higher tax revenue and REDUCE the deficit! He even sounded as if he really believed it, I have said for a long time that he can’t possibly be that stupid, have I been the stupid one all along by misunderestimating how stupid liberals can be? If people are really that stupid this is hugh and series. Maybe I just don’t understand arithmetic, is ten MINUS eight really eighteen? Do two and two really equal twenty two? Is reality like Play Doh? Do Pelosi and Biden together equal Da Vinci multiplied by Einstein? My head hurts.
