Freshman Sen. Ted Cruz, who has led the tea party wing of Republicans in Congress in their effort to defund Obamacare, is an intelligent and principled debater, says his old Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz.
Appearing Tuesday on CNN's "Piers Morgan Live," Dershowitz called the Texas Republican "one of the sharpest students I had, in terms of analytic skills. I've had 10,000 students over my 50 years at Harvard . . . He has to qualify among the brightest of the students."

Dershowitz has made a handful of objective comments despite the political tide. CNN is responsible for the scheduling.
Is he kidding? They were talking about killing tyrants if need be. The shutting down of the government was exactly what they had in mind.

I actually was in the minority here, in that I disagreed with Ted Cruz on Obamacare.
But I’m all for him in every other regard.
Now. There is a Republican healthcare bill in the house, which they did not pass. Yet.

And Cruz is not the smartest of conservative patriots..
Former economic adviser to President Barack Obama, Austan Goolsbee, appearing on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity” on Tuesday, said much the same thing about his former Harvard classmate.
“I think Democrats would make a big mistake to underestimate him,” Goolsbee said. “I think he’s very smart.”
Alan Dershowitz can be a fair man at times, even if he is a liberal.
In all the years Barack Obama has been in the public eye, never once has a former professor of his made a statement praising his intelligence or abilities as Alan Dershowitz has done for Ted Cruz.
The Clintons also have never been publicly praised by any of their former professors at the Yale Law School or their undergraduate colleges.
In addition, neither Obama nor the Clintons ever served as Supreme Court clerks — a great distinction — as Ted Cruz and Mike Lee have. In Washington, Ted Cruz is Gulliver among the Lilliputians, and he proves it more and more each day.

Dershowitz’s - for better or worse - is totally his own man. He says what he believes - period. Sometimes he stands with liberals, sometimes with conservatives...
Forty six Senators talking serially on a range of issues could have slowed down, or stopped a hundred bills that mean something to individual Democrats but nothing to the leader. McConnell, however, does not have it in himself the ability to lead an insurrection.
