In Tennessee, activists said they have seen a surge of enthusiasm for an effort to eject Alexander from office.

“This has energized people,” said Ben Cunningham, president of the Nashville Tea Party. “This confirmed our perception that we are going to have to replace people in Congress who talk conservative — and talk and talk and talk — and do nothing.”

Cunningham said activists’ focus on upcoming elections underscores how the tea party has transformed itself since it first emerged in 2009.

“We have gone from a protest movement to a movement about the nuts and bolts of elections,” he said.

-- I say time for third-party with some reluctance. --

The only threat it needs to pose, for starters, is losses to the GOP. The third party needn't be viable in its own right to change the behavior of the existing parties, it just needs to siphon off a certain number of supporters.

You can bet there will be all sorts of whining, crying, wailing and name calling from the party faithful. Screw 'em. Pyaback is a bitch.

In my opinion, here’s what the TP needs to do:

1. No third party. Form a caucus within the party, structure and market it as such. You literally could make it a party within a party and do things like it’s own caucuses, conventions, fundraising, candidates, brand - you name it.

2. Mirror the GOPe structure and once you have the majority - take over the GOP. It can be done and has been done. Learn the mechanics, the angles, the strategy, gather the forces, execute the plan.

3. Work at the federal level, but don’t forget the state level. Voter ID, crushing the unions, welfare reform - these are ways to beat the Dems without ever having to go to Washington.

4. Keep the issue advocacy wing, but again realize that the fruits will bear more at the state level.

5. Always, always, always work to understand the mechanics of the system and exploit it to your advantage.

6. Keep the focus on candidates and majorities first, issue advocacy second, or rather supporting.

I’ve seen what the GOP does to fresh new people with conservative values both as they are running for office and after they are in office. The GOP left me and I will not be back.

Great! If it helps, I started out getting active - at other places on the net then right here. Then I got into an issue advocacy group. Then I helped stop county zoning in my county, then Smart Growth in the state. They were all shoestring efforts.

Then I got involved in the county GOP. Better word is infiltrated. Ran a county supervisor campaign. Then more and advised. Then advised state level campaigns, then ran them. Then field staff for congressional campaigns. Now I’m an experienced operative and people seek my opinion. And I give it!

As I went on I networked like hell with other conservative operatives and activists. Now I’m well networked and have a measure of influence in my corner of the state. Nothing magical, just hard work, think for myself, and willingness to put myself out there. Not made much money off of it and sure ain’t rich.

And what do you think is going to happen with a 3rd party? It will be worse. If you can’t stomach the intraparty battles in the GOP, you won’t last long in the 3rd party movement.

Speaking of replacing the RINOS like McConnel, I noticed this from Politico:

. . . “The legislation also includes a McConnell-written proposal that would allow Congress to disapprove of the debt-ceiling increase. Lawmakers will formally vote on rejecting the bump of the borrowing limit - if it passed, it could be vetoed by Obama.”

Nothing like handing Obama the power of the purse.
