Majority of 25,000 enrolled through new WA health exchange will have fully-subsidized insurance

Enrollments in health care plans through Washington state's new health care exchange continue to increase, but it turns out a majority of the enrollees so far won't be paying for their plans.

"The Medicaid newly eligible population accounts for a little more than half of the 25,000 that we've seen," Michael Marchand, with the new Washington Health Care Exchange, tells KIRO Radio's Dave Ross.

A Medicaid expansion under Obamacare raised the income threshold for those eligible.

"So that's the new population that's part of the expansion that the state undertook," says Marchand. "It's quite possible that those people may have never had health insurance in the past and have been able to go to Washington Health Plan Finder and determine that their eligibility actually qualifies them for free insurance."

In addition to the 25,000 enrolled, an additional 37,000 residents have completed online applications that are awaiting payment that is due in December.

The state estimates about 1 million Washington state residents do not have health insurance, or about one in seven people.

Marchand says they've found the bulk of those uninsured will likely get fully-subsidized health care or assistance of some kind.

"We've figured out that probably more than 90 percent of those who are of the 1 million who are currently uninsured, they're going to receive financial help in one way or another, whether it's free or through tax credits."

Washington residents have six months to buy health insurance through the new exchange during the first enrollment period ending in March.

I bet they are either on welfare, social security, some sort of public assistance or earn lower wages that is the only way you get it for free and some of those that do work for lower wages may just get tax credits.

The WA plans are by the major providers, so that shouldn't limit access. What will limit access is the costs. What we are going to see now is the poor will get fully paid care. The middle class without employer coverage will have coverage they can barely afford and can't afford to use.

Here are the rates for a family of five on the WA plan. Bronze and silver are basically high deductible plans.

Bronze $880 a month, deductible $5250 ind/$10500 family, max out of pocket $5250/$10500. You are paying everything until you get to your cap, but you are allowed an Health Savings Account.

Silver 1080 a month. Deductibles $2500/$5000, max out of pocket $4100/8200, you pay 20% after you meet the deductible. Still eligible for an HSA.

Gold 1335 a month (more than my mortgage, taxes and insurance on my last home) Deductibles $1500/3000, out of pocket $4500/$9000. Primary care $10 copay. No HSA.

Does fully subsidized mean just the monthly premium or the deductible also?

“Walmart Plunderers”

AKA the "Free $hit Army" - an Obama constituency to the core, out in force every 4 years; otherwise, nowhere to be found otherwise, unless you look under highway overpasses and in back alleys.

They are not accepting it until you can prove you’ve met your deductible, too.

DUH !!!

Maybe the Obama administration really did believe that young, healthy people who don't want health insurance would rush to buy an overpriced ObamaCare policy because they know their money is needed to pay for free insurance for moochers and illegals.

What qualifies them for the “free” insurance?

EBT Card, Communist Party Card, Democrat Party Membership Card, black skin, be a muslim, or illegal alien.

It’s nothing but an extortion racket to make people buy essentially useless health insurance to pay for another pseudo-Medicaid system for the takers.
