Cory Booker to conduct same-sex marriages in New Jersey
CNN ^ | October 18, 2013

(CNN) - Senator-elect Cory Booker will move forward with his support of same-sex marriage even before he is sworn in, with plans to grant the marriages of several same-sex couples 12:01 a.m. Monday after a court ruling goes into effect.

The story was first reported by Buzzfeed. The New Jersey Democrat, who's the mayor of Newark, re-tweeted that article to his celebrity-sized Twitter crowd of 1.4 million followers.

According to Buzzfeed, Booker will recognize the weddings of at least 10 same-sex couples at Newark City Hall.

The weddings will come after a New Jersey judge ruled last month that the already legal civil unions in the state didn't go far enough because they prevented couples from getting federal benefits. In her ruling, the judge cited the June Supreme Court decision that overturned a key part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

well of course he will.

He has to prove how liberal he is.

Remember it wasn’t too many years ago that liberals were willing to say they opposed homosexual marriage? Now it’s a given that of course good liberals support it. It’s bigoted not to and all that.

My nephew is gay. He’s a wonderful young man that contributes positively to his community. He lives in NY with his husband. They know we love them both and want them to be happy. They also know that I don’t think they are “married”.

I’ve been asked why and I can’t articulate a reason. I just don’t like the idea that a generations old definition should be changed or amended to include same sex couples.

They appreciate my argument about the “slipperly slope”. I don’t make any sort of religious based argument because the Bible can be very contradictory and outdated and they are quick to point that out. There’s no bad blood between any of us.

I guess my question is - how do you respond when someone asks why you’re against it? How do you respond when they ask - “Why can’t we be happy?” “How does our marriage affect you negatively in any way?”

I have a hard time answering. The only thing I can say is that they CAN be happy and it DOESN’T affect me negatively but I still don’t like it and think they should have Civil Unions.

Help me out here.

PS - Sorry for the “thread drift” but I wasn’t about to start a vanity thread for this. It’s been gnawing at me for some time and I’d like the reasoned opinions of people here so that I can consider a different way to respond.

the judge is an idiot

a. it is not the job of the fifty sovereign states to manage their law to make-up-for a perceived “deficit” in federal law

b. establishment of “same sex marriage” IN THE STATES THAT HAVE CIVIL UNION LAWS, BY JUDICIAL FIAT is neither proper, legitimate or necessary

c. the “plaintiffs” needed to take their case to federal legislators where, by mere legislation and without the judges and without changing the definition of marriage, federal law can make it that where “marriage” and “spouse” are part of federal law, “civil union”/”civil partnership” and “civil partner” are acceptable substitutes IN THE CASE OF persons who have obtained a legal civil partnership in their state.

With civil partneships established in various, it is NOT a failure of state law that federal law has not put civil partnerships on a legal par with the spouses in a marriage. The “federal denial” is neither an error of or a responsibility of states, and particularly NOT state judges to “fix” by judicial fiat.

Both apples and organges might be O.K. Calling an apple an orange, for convenenience sake, does not make them equal or same - it makes a mockery of their differences.

It's instructive that the redefinition of marriage largely has to be forced. If people were really so in favor of this, why is force needed?

The fact that you think civil unions are just fine is the problem.

successful campaign based on “buttBook” it certainly figures— the great unwashed downtrodden whose lifestyle choice has become a “right”... while still crying “victim” like the arrested development children they are. Stuck in oral anal fixation. It all really does figure.

You can do a search on homosexual issues here on FR which will give you tons of information that you need to form your arguments. I see you’re fairly new here, so do a search.

"I’ve been asked why and I can’t articulate a reason."

It's insanity, pure and simple. It's the inability accept the reality of which sex you were born.

“How does our marriage affect you negatively in any way?”

It affects you, me, and all of us because it affects our civilization. The homosexual/atheist/Communist/Satanist axis wants to destroy Western civilization, so they're attacking the pillars of our society: faith, family, marriage, language, national borders, patriotism, and so on. When those pillars crumble -- and they're well on their way to that -- Western civilization will collapse, and the forces of evil will be able to establish the Satanist/Communist/sexually perverted society they so desperately want.

So yes, your nephew's so-called "marriage" does affect you...and me. Just as the decision of a young woman in my family to "live as a man" (taking male hormones and everything) with her girlfriend affects me...and you. On a case by case basis, those insane people's insane decisions may not affect anyone outside their/our heartbroken families. But together, they threaten our society, and that's why it affects you. And me. And the rest of us.

I will always love that particular young family member, but I do not accept her insanity. She is my enemy in the cultural civil war that's raging in our Republic. That's how we have to look at it, as painful as it may be.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
