Colonel in charge of Quantico's Security Battalion relieved

Col. Daren Margolin has been relieved as head of Security Battalion at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. (Marine Corps)

The two-star head of Marine Corps Installations Command has relieved the commanding officer of Quantico’s Security Battalion following an incident involving a personal weapon, Marine Corps officials said.

Col. Daren Margolin, a 24-year officer was removed from his post Oct. 18 by Maj. Gen. Juan Ayala due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command, said Capt. Maureen Krebs, a Marine Corps spokeswoman.

Krebs said the decision stemmed from a single incident last week involving one of Margolin’s personal weapons, but said she did not have authorization to elaborate on the incident. Margolin has also been charged with several violations under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, but the specific charges are not releasable because Margolin’s relief was the result of an administrative process, she said.

A legal officer, Margolin previously served at the Staff Judge Advocate for Camp Pendleton’s 1st Marine Division. He took command of Security Battalion in June.

The relief follows a series of deadly events involving firearms aboard Marine Corps installations in the National Capitol Region. In March, a tactics instructor at Quantico’s Officer Candidates School gunned down two Marine colleagues before turning his weapon on himself. Following the incident, the school’s commander, Col. Kris Stillings, was relieved of duty.

“All of these guys who appear on paper to have impressive resumes and service records.”

Of course. You don’t get to be a General/Flag Officer without an impressive resume and a record of outstanding performance. The competition for promotion is very intense and the scrutiny is as well. But, mistakes are made and some guys misbehave once they have reached that lofty level. Most of these cases involve some sort of personal indiscretion.

The urban legend surrounding at least two of these cases is just flat out wrong, and since they are the incidents connected with the Benghazi attack, they got all of the purge nonsense started.

General Carter Ham, AFRICOM commander retired from the service at the end of a two year assignment as AFRICOM Commander (These commands are normally held for between 2-4 years). He wasn’t relieved, wasn’t reprimanded, wasn’t purged. He retired at his own request as every single officer in the Armed Forces does. He served longer than most.

Rear Admiral Charles Gaouette commanded Carrier Strike Group Three in the Arabian Sea supporting operations in Afghanistan. Geography, people. The Arabian Sea is separated from the Med by the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. He had nothing to do with Benghazi. He was relieved following a pissing contest that he had with the Skipper of his flagship, the USS Stennis. The Captain apparently won. Read more here:

I was going to post words to the same effect. And who, in a position of authority, gives a damn? thus far, no one.

I grew up in the Army, spent 25 years on active duty, and have supported senior levels of the Army for the last 20 years. The rate of these incidents is no different than at any other time during that period.

Thanks for the reality check. I have wondered whether there is really a purge going on or a case of "shark attack syndrome" where the press, by reporting more of these incidents, leaves the impression that the number of incidents is suddenly way above the norm.

Bet 0 has been having the NSA run checks on the officers during their off-duty hours to see what they are saying and texting on their phones and the email messages they are sending and receiving.

It was just a couple days ago there was a thread that the head and assistant to the head of NSA "retired" so wonder how that fits in. Could be hussein wanting to replace them with more brotherhood or they were going to be charged with something or they just couldn't stomach it anymore.

I didn’t see NSA Director and Head of Cyber Command Army Gen. Keith Alexander on your military list. He is to retire in March.

John “Chris” Inglis, NSA Deputy Director, is also retiring in Jan. Richard Ledgett, “the executive in charge of matters related to unauthorized media disclosures” will replace Inglis.

And “the deputy at Cyber Command, Marine Corps Lieutenant General Jon Davis, is due to leave in June when his two-year assignment is completed.”

Maybe the three heads should be on a waiting to leave list. Three heads leaving within months of each other?

Parents will do a lot to protect their children, it’s the way we are made. Evil people know this and how to use it.

Surely there's some old high ranking fart who doesn't have any family who's willing to bite the bullet.

I saw the resignations but did not make the connection you did. Forced to retire? Hmmm. Possible.

Do McCrystal and Petraeus count?

Interesting you said that. I thought of Petraeus after I posted.

Interesting. Thanks for posting. That explains two. Sure seems like a high number since the first of the year though.

Not that either one should have stayed in because of my view of their ROE. Too powerful was Petraeus.

>>What other explanations can there be?

Maslov’s Pyramid. The federal workers have retirement plans that the rest of us will never have. They have benefits that we will never have. They receive regular pay raises, even at the lowest levels—something that private sector blue and gray collar workers haven’t seen in years. They aren’t willing to risk that.

Then, the fed gov has replaced most lower and middle level management with afrocentrist fascists who watch the white workers like a hawk, just waiting for one of them to step out of line so they can take all those bennies away forever.

Finally, honor is something that has been replaced with pragmatism for many Americans. We cheer when someone takes a stand for something that WE believe in, but we don’t cheer for people who take a stand for anything else.

The educational system, the media (both news and entertainment), and the government have trained us to be exactly the kind of people that a Marxist dictator like Obama needs to be able to rule with confidence.

"All of these guys who appear on paper to have impressive resumes and service records. They are the epitome of "Good Troops," and they all of sudden went bad? And all within a few months? This is a coup against our military. The military and the Pentagon need to step up and confront the Marxist dictator before it's too late."
