Who Cares for the Fleas?

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Humane Society, and other animal rights groups have devoted themselves for years to preventing cruelty to animals. Such groups now seek to convince the rest of the world that animals should be “celebrated” and treated like “family” (e.g., “About Us…,” 2011). Such humanistic, evolution-based thinking has resulted in the frequent arrest and prosecution of those who are deemed guilty of mistreating animals. For example, a woman in Missouri was “charged with six counts of felony animal abuse after authorities seized six dogs from a flea-infested property in Iron Mountain Lake” (“Six Dogs…,” 2008, emp. added). As city workers and volunteers worked to clean up the neglected property where the dogs were kept, the local police chief explained: “We have a lot of debris to remove…. We are also going to burn off the ground to get rid of the flea infestation that exists” (“Case Updates,” 2009, emp. added). ...........

Inherent in all of these accounts is the fact that fleas are viewed as undesirable creatures to be eradicated. Their presence on other animals allegedly constitutes abuse by humans. So how should we deal with the nasty flea problem .......

"kill the baby, save the whale.."

"Observe the self-contradiction and utter hypocrisy of the left: Dog owners should be prosecuted for allowing their pets to become flea infested. But how does one prevent dogs from becoming flea infested? Kill the fleas, of course. But wait! What about the fleas? Who is sticking up for their rights? Don’t they have the same right to life as dogs? And where is the consistency in treating a flea problem by attacking the environment with insecticide....."

there was one summer in Taos Missouri when my poor dog and her fleas were Biblical

I had powdered the yard, the house, done flea dip after flea dip and could not get anywhere

I took her to the country vet and he gave her a shot of something used on cattle to keep them from being bitten up. Almost immediately poof! No more fleas.

I have always been grateful to that vet.

Fleas are parasites which carry bubonic plague, pneumonic plague, flea-borne typhus, tapeworm and cat scratch fever, to name a few interesting diseases.

Speaking of fleas is anybody else having a terrible time with fleas this year? We are. Frontline not working, nothing working. The lady at Pet Smart told us to save our money that the fleas are getting immune to the insecticides.

We discovered Diatomaceaous Earth. If you get the food grade variety at Home Depot or a feed store and dust your pet with it and also dust your carpets etc. it sucks the fluid out of the insects and leaves them a dried up husk and is non toxic. Just sharing.

Uh, fleas carry diseases like the Plague. Flea infestations don't just affect 1 house or yard - it spreads to the neighbors. Fleas can infest you without having a pet. I fully support efforts to prosecute abusive pet owners, especially those who create public health problems. Abused, neglected pets are a public health hazard.

The idea that it is hypocrisy to love the dog but hate the flea is ridiculous. Even the dog knows that. Yes, the PETA bunch are loons, but the opposite extreme can be just as loony.

I would remind the author that love is not finite. One can love the Lord & love his dog, bird, children, & spouse, too. One can love all he wants without diminishing the love to any individual. Love is not something that requires rationing.

Someone needs to get his head out of a book & look around at all the wonders God has given to us - among them is domesticated animals. That man can bond emotionally with an animal is a wonder, & a good thing, not bad.

Yes I have. It has been a very bad year for fleas, and I was getting nowhere with frontline, which is normally very good. However, the vet suggested a new product, a largish pill to each pet every month, and that worked a treat. Cant remember what it was called now...

Yes we had ours on Trifexis or whatever last year. It is supposed to still work. I read some negative stuff about it online so we took them off. My vet said last week that its safe and he has his dogs on it so we may put them back on. But in the meantime we are going to dust with the Diatomeceous Earth to get rid of the fleas for now.

It’s a big, soft brownish pill? That’s what I had to get last year, and it was very effective. After a couple hours, you can see the fleas abandoning ship like mad! Need to give the dog a bath the next day to get the millions of fleas off the pooch.

I had to smush mine up and mix it into a piece of cheese to get the dog to eat it.

Sorry, can’t remember what it’s called, but the vet will know by the description.

The one I got was about the size of a 10-high stack of quarters. No wonder the cat was mad!

Well, then, what about the rights of those bacteria and virii? Just because it may cause death, disfigurement and terrible pain in human beings and animals, why should its right to life be invalidated? Are we such bigots that we cannot see the genocide we are committing to these little friends? /S
