One less bowl of cereal a week for his boy, one less sandwich a week for himself. That's what Friday's cut to national food stamp allotments means to Lionel Hill, but the math equation for lost meals is bound to get worse in the coming months.
Hill, 57, and others who need the government aid to eat have no hope of getting their lost benefits back, considering the only debate in Congress over the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - food stamps - is how much further to slash it. That makes the situation both personal and worrisome in his household.
"Food stamps mean a lot to me," said the retired elections worker, who lives in San Francisco with extended family and is attending community college to retool his job skills. "I'm raising my 7-year-old nephew, and with food stamps I can concentrate more on paying rent, gas, bus fare, utilities.

An elections worker??? That’s kind of seasonal, isn’t it?
He ought to get in line with the thousands of Mexican citizens who are milking the ETB system in CA. They definitely know how to get their freebies.
All part of Moochelle’s anti-obesity campaign. They need to get used to it.
Why should I who am older than this fellow and still working want to transfer more of my income to his household?
We are the Federal Government and we do not give a flying crap if you want to transfer your money or not. You will do it because we tell you too.......
He can afford to live in San Francisco?
There are armies of people just 20 miles south of him with advanced degrees in Engineering who can't afford to live in San Francisco.
But somehow he "deserves" to and the rest of the country is supposed to subsidize that.
What's next, a demand to live in the mansions of Pacific Heights?
Who does he think he is, Dianne Feinstein?
Still trying ...
Arrrrghhhh .... ungggghhhh ...
“Why should I who am older than this fellow and still working want to transfer more of my income to his household?”
How DARE YOU even ASK that question, you racist, bigotted, conservative homophobe! *SMIRK* (HEART)
I hear ya - however, I was really, REALLY poor as a kid and that Free Government Cheese was our salvation some months. Been working since I was a teen and haven’t taken a hand-out since, so I agree with not having my wealth re-distributed, too! Grrrr!
retired elections worker = former Acorn employee
Sounds like your Give-a-Damn’s busted, Iron Jack, LOL!
(Mine is, too!)
Life sucks when you depend on someone else to provide for you.
The child in the photo accompanying the article is obese, as well as the adult male. A bit less food will help them get healthy
Moochelle wanted the nation to lose weight, get healthy.. cinch it up America, you’re about to lean out.
I just had this food stamp debate on an NFL football forum with a bunch of commie libs.
It was the same old excuses.
Everybody on food stamps is dirt poor. Fraud and abuse is almost nil. Corporations are evil. Corporate welfare far outpaces assistance to the poor. The poor would starve without food stamps. Walmart and MacDonalds are evil and intentinally underpay their workers.
The commie libs trotted out every excuse in the book why people should be lazy and not work, or stay in entry level jobs and not work to get better jobs.
You don’t pay people not to work. You get more of what you subsidize. If you subsidize people on the take, you get more people on the take.
My father grew up dirt poor and not a single food stamp for him, but now fraud and abuse is rampant. Government destroys everything it touches.
This is all part of Michelle Obama’s plan to reduce obesity among the poor.

My micro-violin broke many years ago. Maybe the guy should get a real job...and from the picture...eat less.
Shut up until you can (not you artichokegrower).
It’s not how much of your income you “want to transfer” the new meme I want everybody to use that the demonrats might understand is “how many hours of my day does this person believes he has a right to?”. Money to demonrats is evil, but hours of day dedicated to people who don’t even dedicate time to their own upkeep is harder to argue
If you like your food stamps you can keep them. PERIOD !!!
Many schools are providing breakfast, lunch and even sending a knapsack home with them on the weekends, filled with food.
Why aren’t those meals being deducted from the welfare money they get since they are ‘double dipping’?
Welfare ain’t meant to buy luxury food. If he is retired, a bag of flour, bag of rice and bag of beans will go very far.
I’ll bet the flat screen in the living room would fetch enough to make up the difference.
Also... this temporary increase was a gimme that resulted from Porkulus in 2009. How ever did the poor little waifs survive prior to that?
Come on. This guy lives in San Fran the liberal bastion of the US. He should be able to go on the streets and beg that $20 in about 5 minutes. Its not like he has any dignity left to lose.
and because of dumb**&^ plan, my healthcare costs have gone up 20%. That’s 20% less money I have to spend on discretionary things like food, clothes, maybe going to a movie, etc.
spare me the sympathy stories.
I also see a microwave in the background. I notice the pictures are getting better at not revealing too much about the households.
there was one article posted the other day with a picture of a mom and her kid with a bunch of wine bottles in the back. you got money for alcohol, you got money for food.
Watch the price of used Escalades drops as many hit the market.
So what was so wrong with distribution of commodities?
A similar program of providing other household foodstuffs, such as peanut butter, saltine crackers, dried milk and baloney, will keep people alive. Living facilities with access to cooking utensils could also make use of rice, various kinds of pasta, and canned meats or fish.
No food stamps were necessary when people could walk into local food pantries and just select the minimum food supplies necessary to adequately feed the very young and elderly. Supposedly, this option is still available in most places in the territory once known as “the United States of America”.
Not a perfect system, by any means, but the SNAP agency is?
I’m raising my 7-year-old nephew?
Does this Nephew have parents?? Does the family give support for raising him, Does he have a cell phone, gameboi
big screen tv. does he get 2 free meals a day at school. does he go to school or stay home??
The increase in benefits was part of the stimulus.
The increase has expired.
How did they survive before the stimulus?
For every family like this their are TWENTY who have to buy two less bags of crack and 3 forties. This program should be temporary not generational. At least they should be made to work if they can’t make it on their own.
So long as this guy (http://www.ijreview.com/2013/08/72344-obamas-food-stamp-program-ca-surfer-buys-sushi-lobster-avoids-work/) can continue his scam, the program is overfunded.
Well, he retired from his elections office job in his 50's, so his pension is probably a mere $120K or so... no one can live on that. Absolutely we should work until we're 85 so we can help this poor man get by.
Is the Ministry of Praise and Propaganda going to write articles on that subject?
It makes me mad to see people checking out with meats I can't afford like I used to!
If he is on food stamps the child already gets free breakfast/lunch at school
What’s the big deal
Raising seven year old nephew = $$$$ from uncle sugar.
Oddly enough, I find myself sympathizing with the working mom who has to pay half of her meager salary in taxes, or the blue-collar dad who can't afford to send his daughter to college because he's broke after paying for obamaphones, Section 8 housing, and EBT for third-generation parasites.
So maybe it's just a distortion in the Sympathy Field.
the story is just further proof that liberalism is a mental disorder...
Part of the problem with Food Stamps and its funding that the eligible income limit levels have been raised to a point where some on Food Stamps are not really as much in need as others, so budget cuts to food stamps get spread equally, falling hardest on those getting them who are most in need.
What is clear is (1) if the eligibility requirements did not change and (2) in as much as the 2009 stimulus was meant to ONLY help out during a recession, and prices do not normally go up during a recession, and (3) people already on food stamps were not faced with higher food costs more than the rest of the population (for which a smaller increase than 135% in Food Stamp funding might have been in order, then (4) most of the increase was (or was it???) based on the expectation of more people falling to and under the income eligibility limits, and thus adding to those already qualified and for that reason - additional folks meeting the same earlier income limits, due to the recession.
So, now, four years after that temporary inccrease was done, it is being cut back, so what is the cause of cut back in how much each beneficiary csn get?
The decrease in the rolls, expected to result from all the government stimulus and how it was going to improve the economny - produce more jobs - did not materialize (at least not in the numbers expected).
The expectation was that the numbers on the benefit will fall back closer to previous levels once the Obama recovery took hold. Who is to blame for that?
Additionally, some states (New York for instance) no longer (since???) are looking at savings, investments, IRAs & 401ks. etc - money socked away - in judging eligibility, although the federal SNAL website says it is still part of eligibility. That’s fantastic for someone who wants to get out of the rat race, downsize their lifestyle, let their restirement accounts percolate and just not earn above the income levels for food stamps and Medicaid, and apply for both - the rest of us will take care of you while your retirement acconts keep earning their dividends. How nice.
Food stamps cut? And, you are believing that people are being hurt as a result?
Here’s the solution. Why don’t you head uptown, walk around and ask who was hurt by the cut. Hand each of them a $50 bill. Go home and feel good about yourself. Because, THAT is the way charity should work.
There. Fixed it.
There are many food banks who will pick up the slack if it comes to eating or not.
We have a fabulous one in my town.....all the grocery stores contribute vasts amount of food.....no waste for fresh products either as that which begins to spoil is picked up by a pig farmer.
My mom raised all four of us after my dad died from war injuries....
She got ‘surplus food’ to offset what she couldn’t purchase with her waitress job and selling Avon door to door....she made most of our clothes....and this while getting her nursing license to better herself. Thereafter landing a job at the County Old folks Home which she retired from.
We didn’t know we were poor....my mom hid her struggles from us very well.
I don’t believe they’re actually complaining...I think this is a Democratic ploy as usual.
Retired at 57? elections worker? back to college to retool his work skills? you have to be kidding me! This is a joke, please tell me it’s a joke! What skills are needed to be an elections worker? and he retired at the ripe old age of 57 and now attending college to learn a real trade at 57 years old! Im floored
Nothing. Kept my belly full as a kid when it was needed and my parents are two of the most GENEROUS people on the planet. They have given back to others in MANY ways once they financially could, through church and community.
We always joke about Grandma feeding all 12 of us on one boiled potato and whatever roadkill Grandpa found that day, LOL!
I miss the America I grew up in.
And THIS was inner-City Milwaukee - back in the late 50’s, early 60’s. Gone. Gone. Gone. My old neighborhood is Latino Gang Bangers now. In less than 50 years! But it was 50 YEARS of Socialism, mind you. *SPIT*
