One less bowl of cereal a week for his boy, one less sandwich a week for himself. That's what Friday's cut to national food stamp allotments means to Lionel Hill, but the math equation for lost meals is bound to get worse in the coming months.
Hill, 57, and others who need the government aid to eat have no hope of getting their lost benefits back, considering the only debate in Congress over the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - food stamps - is how much further to slash it. That makes the situation both personal and worrisome in his household.
"Food stamps mean a lot to me," said the retired elections worker, who lives in San Francisco with extended family and is attending community college to retool his job skills. "I'm raising my 7-year-old nephew, and with food stamps I can concentrate more on paying rent, gas, bus fare, utilities.

An elections worker??? That’s kind of seasonal, isn’t it?
He ought to get in line with the thousands of Mexican citizens who are milking the ETB system in CA. They definitely know how to get their freebies.
All part of Moochelle’s anti-obesity campaign. They need to get used to it.
Otherwise, STFU.
Why should I who am older than this fellow and still working want to transfer more of my income to his household?
We are the Federal Government and we do not give a flying crap if you want to transfer your money or not. You will do it because we tell you too.......
He can afford to live in San Francisco?
Why?
There are armies of people just 20 miles south of him with advanced degrees in Engineering who can't afford to live in San Francisco.
But somehow he "deserves" to and the rest of the country is supposed to subsidize that.
What's next, a demand to live in the mansions of Pacific Heights?
Who does he think he is, Dianne Feinstein?
Still trying ...
Arrrrghhhh .... ungggghhhh ...
Nope. Nothing.
“Why should I who am older than this fellow and still working want to transfer more of my income to his household?”
How DARE YOU even ASK that question, you racist, bigotted, conservative homophobe! *SMIRK* (HEART)
I hear ya - however, I was really, REALLY poor as a kid and that Free Government Cheese was our salvation some months. Been working since I was a teen and haven’t taken a hand-out since, so I agree with not having my wealth re-distributed, too! Grrrr!
retired elections worker = former Acorn employee
Sounds like your Give-a-Damn’s busted, Iron Jack, LOL!
(Mine is, too!)
Life sucks when you depend on someone else to provide for you.
The child in the photo accompanying the article is obese, as well as the adult male. A bit less food will help them get healthy
Moochelle wanted the nation to lose weight, get healthy.. cinch it up America, you’re about to lean out.
I just had this food stamp debate on an NFL football forum with a bunch of commie libs.
It was the same old excuses.
Everybody on food stamps is dirt poor. Fraud and abuse is almost nil. Corporations are evil. Corporate welfare far outpaces assistance to the poor. The poor would starve without food stamps. Walmart and MacDonalds are evil and intentinally underpay their workers.
The commie libs trotted out every excuse in the book why people should be lazy and not work, or stay in entry level jobs and not work to get better jobs.
You don’t pay people not to work. You get more of what you subsidize. If you subsidize people on the take, you get more people on the take.
My father grew up dirt poor and not a single food stamp for him, but now fraud and abuse is rampant. Government destroys everything it touches.
This is all part of Michelle Obama’s plan to reduce obesity among the poor.
My micro-violin broke many years ago. Maybe the guy should get a real job...and from the picture...eat less.
Shut up until you can (not you artichokegrower).
It’s not how much of your income you “want to transfer” the new meme I want everybody to use that the demonrats might understand is “how many hours of my day does this person believes he has a right to?”. Money to demonrats is evil, but hours of day dedicated to people who don’t even dedicate time to their own upkeep is harder to argue
