Meet Paul Ryan 2.0
The National Journal ^ | 10-31-13 | Tim Alberta

This was shaping up to be Paul Ryan's moment.

With the Republican Party reeling from a government shutdown and a near disaster over the debt limit, the chairman of the House Budget Committee was tasked with leading the GOP in a six-week bicameral budget conference. Republicans, who demanded these talks in exchange for a short-term budget resolution, were expected to pursue big-picture negotiations over America's long-term fiscal challenges.

But that's not going to happen. Since being appointed as the Republican negotiating chief two weeks ago, Ryan has endeavored to lower public expectations for the committee, saying he hopes to pursue small, targeted policy fixes rather than broad, sweeping reforms.

"We don't want to set expectations that aren't going to be achieved. That's not helpful," Ryan told National Journal Daily on the eve of negotiations.

Ryan added: "There won't be a grand bargain. So we shouldn't suggest that there will be."

Such modesty of purpose sounds peculiar coming from a politician who, after Republicans regained the House majority in 2011, was celebrated by conservatives as America's fiscal messiah. When Ryan released a budget that year, he described it as "the new House majority's answer to history's call."

Indeed, Ryan viewed his role in momentous context. Upon taking the Budget Committee gavel in 2011, he envisioned a great fiscal settlement, built upon sweeping reforms to America's entitlement system. But for nearly three years thereafter, Washington failed to reach a comprehensive agreement, with both sides balking on concessions and reverting to finger-pointing that eroded trust and emptied the Capitol's already-diminished reservoir of goodwill.

Of course, Ryan was no innocent.

Both my hands are raised, GG2. And I’ll bet Paul Ryan, from my home state, loses his race next time. Neither his GOP-E friends or his hometown of Janesville won’t even pull him across the finish line.
I was done with him when he and Mittens handed out lousy sub sandwiches to bribe voters two blocks from Santorum’s campaign office. Rick was going to win the state until Reince and Co. decided it was going to be We the Republican Party rather than We the People.
No more RINOS. God Bless Mark Levin for being the only true conservative talk show host carrying the message.
And God Bless the state of Texas for giving us Ted Cruz and the state of Alaska for Sarah Palin.

Pro amnesty and outed RINO. He even lost a debate with the doltish Biden. No thanks. Paul Ryan 2.0 is worse than 1.0.

A year ago, I wanted Paul Ryan to be president.

Now, I couldn’t care less if he loses re-election to the House next November. Eff him.

Way over. He may as well settle in to permanent obscurity.

Once Ryan showed his true colors as a pure RINO, I was done with him forever.

Same here. The first hint Lyin' Ryan gave me of his RINOness was when he and Slick Willy were caught on a hot mic talking. Nothing outrageous was said, I think der Slickster invited Ryan to meet to discuss his budget plan, but the optics gave me the creeps.

When Ryan couldn't even hold his own with Crazy Joe Biden, I pretty much gave up on him. Now that he's pushing his amnesty cr@p, I'm done.

There was once a time when I swooned over those baby blues.
Alas.... It is gone. All gone.

Rino indeed!! Amnesty! So smart only Biden can out-think him!

What a guy! What I don’t like about him is his move to the left. Guess he wants to play ball with the elites. Easy to scrap principles then.

When I see him on TV, I do the same thing I do when I see Bonner, Rubio, Jeb and Hoar-hey Bush, Rove, etc. — cringe, hit the channel changer, and go over to the American Pickers show.

Absurd. Paul Ryan’s a smart guy and a good guy to have in our camp. The reality is we hold a single branch and don’t have the other 2/3s. Incremental change is good, very good. Voters like it and it gives the appearance of smooth transition and competence.

Even when we regain the Senate we will still have to negotiate to get around an Obama veto. Small incremental steps, compounding annually.

Targeted fixes with broad support on our side and some renegade Dems is better for the country in the long run. Once Obama’s out, then we can run faster. The people want consistency, level headedness, and a reasonable pace of reform.

Yup. I have a zero tolerance policy now that we are in the midst of the revolution. Zero tolerance for Romanov style appeasers.

We do need some kind of immigration reform, at least one that secures the border and makes legal immigration easier while punishing illegal immigration.

You do realize that we have de facto amnesty right now, no?

Even the elect will be deceived, IF that were possible.

He is a liar. Most of THEM are.

It’s getting really hard to tell the difference.

Been over Ryan for a while, but don’t discount the truth of his statements and lose out on other opportunities because you don’t like the rest of him. The way the Dims got us to where we were was in thousands of baby steps that finally built the huge snowball that is taking us down the hill of destruction. Trying to do something huge (like ObamaCare) would likely have similar results - if you don’t have an intricate phasing plan, you will step on so many toes that all support will be lost (except for the most rabid believers) just as many Zero supporters are now ruing reality.
