As Bush Settles Into Dallas, Golf Tees and Family Time Now Trump Politics

DALLAS — When the executive director of former President George W. Bush’s public policy institute decided to move on recently, he stopped by for an exit interview. Mr. Bush asked if he had anything in particular he wanted to talk about.

Nothing specific, said James K. Glassman, the departing director.

“O.K.,” Mr. Bush replied, “I want to talk about painting.”

After early self-portraits in the shower and then dozens of paintings of dogs and cats, Mr. Bush, it seems, has now moved on to world leaders. He told Mr. Glassman that he wanted to produce portraits of 19 foreign presidents and prime ministers he worked with during his time in the White House.

Nearly five years after leaving office, the nation’s 43rd president lives a life of self-imposed exile in Texas, more interested in painting than politics, recovering from a heart scare, privately worried about the rise of the Tea Party, golfing with fervor, bicycling with wounded veterans and enjoying a modest revival in public opinion. While Bill Clinton criticizes Republicans on the campaign trail and Dick Cheney chastises the current administration on his book tour, Mr. Bush resolutely stays out of the public debate.

But to say he was a complete disaster is crazy when you think of what President Gore would have done, or President Kerry.

Yes, we can at least say: Gore and/or Kerry would have been worse.

And at least most of W's defenders seem to have gotten away from bragging about his wonderful SCOTUS appointments, neither of which were actually his first choices.

Sometimes things are what they are. We don’t have a third choice.

I was so happy about Roberts. I thought we were buying a good 30 or 40 years of good conservative leadership in the court. I still don’t understand what the hell happened there.

He seemed either blackmailed or bought. Maybe someday we’ll know.

Yeah I think Judas Roberts cured them of that.

And some still have to be reminded now and then that Alito was not W's first choice, and wouldn't be on the court if there hadn't been an uprising of protest against Harriet Miers.

Is there any truth that you know of about him cheating (or something to that effect) on the adoption of his kids? It seems too conpiratorial to me, but the whole thing makes no sense.

The term “normal Americans” doesn't mean what we think it means. The times they are a changing.

Normal Americans Elected Obama, not once, but twice. Normal Americans support Abortion Rights, they don't like it, but the Left has convinced them that Women must have a Choice.

Normal Americans think the Evil Rich owe them a living. They think Self Responsibility ends for those who haven't won “Life's Lottery”, to quote Bill Clinton.

Normal Americans are cool with Homosexuality because otherwise they would be Judgmental, and we can't have that. That same fear of being Judgmental extends to out of Wedlock Children, Substance Abuse, Inappropriate Behavior, Inappropriate Attire, use of Profanity in Public Venues, Tasteless Entertainment, the list is endless.

Normal as we think of it is Old School, our Society has devolved into New School, if I may paraphrase a certain Witness in an Assault and Battery Case that rendered the Perpetrator room temperature. Of course, people will disagree, but Preaching to the Choir in a Church full of empty Pews will do nothing to change the perception of the new Normal...

Yes, Roberts has been a shock to many. And even though some here have written Ann Coulter off, she was one of the few to express objections to Roberts when he was nominated.

There was some suggested threat to that adoption...don’t know. Now Obamacare is the threat. I’d love to see Roberts lose his cushy govt insurance.

I do not plan on voting for Lindsey Graham for President, either.

Boy, did this thread take a turn toward the retarded.

Roberts was blackmailable over the illegal adoption of his Irish kids, that much is known and has been verified. To be blackmailable in his position is quite sufficient, no heads of unfortunate horses are required to soil anyone’s bed.
