Tuesdays special primary runoff for an Alabama congressional seat is heading toward a photo finish and emerging as a potential black eye for the Republican establishment forces that have converged on the race.
Despite a fierce, last-minute push from House GOP leaders and the business community to supply cash and endorsements to Bradley Byrne, public polling shows the former state senator in a tight race with Dean Young, a flame-throwing tea party contender with a penchant for controversial remarks.
-snip-
Should Young win, it would come as a shock to the business and Washington power brokers whove rushed to Byrnes aid during the final days of the race. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has spent about $200,000 on Byrnes behalf, and the group Ending Spending, funded by TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts, has poured in around $75,000 on TV and radio ads boosting him.
Others backing Byrne with campaign money include House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), as well as dozens of Washington-based political action committees, including the National Association of Homebuilders, Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America, and the National Beer Wholesalers Association.
Young, meanwhile, is relying on a grass-roots organization to pull him over the finish line.

Defund 0DontCare NOW!?
Pass a budget leading to a balanced budget b-4 Zer0 leaves office?
Stuff like that?
The Alabama view on this is that Dean Young is a nobody, with no real political connections to the insider Republicans. Well, there’s feelings now that Dean will get all of the independent votes, all of the Tea Party votes, and a fair portion of the Republican votes. Dean might actually win.
So, all of these special interest groups....via their lobbyists in DC...got calls and were asked to play hard against Dean and infuse cash to fight Dean off. The amount effort against Dean is fairly obvious to most residents in the region. They are laughing over the tactics and the necessity of lobbyists in this episode.
If Dean wins....it’s a sharp stick into the rear of the Republican Party in the state. They just might not have the stamina to win in 2014...with Tea Party players suddenly appearing and getting noticed by local newspapers. Shockingly enough....there’s something rare and unusual going on....folks are asking questions and demanding accountability. Karl Rove’s act doesn’t work anymore.
This really sucks. We should be pulling together, not spend money killing each other. If the establishment candidate is a RINO, by all means yes, he should be defeated. If the Tea Party candidate says some really stupid stuff such as “legitimate rape”, then yes, by all means I could understand that the other side would want to defeat him badly. Otherwise, this is disheartening.
Dean Young is a wealthy lobbyist who has run a dirty, filthy campaign full of lies and distortions. I know, because of live in the AL District being decided. The propoganda that Young is a conservative “Tea Party” candidate is a lie. The crap that he is putting out about Byrne is full of lies and distortions. If he wins the Republican Primary, I will not vote for anyone in the General election even though the Republican Primary winner will most likely carry it.
No bias in “flame throwing”
Help me 'fill in the blanks' ....
South Carolina (Graham) .... Lee Bright
Kentucky (McConnell) .... Matt Bevin
Tennessee (Alexander) .... Joe Carr
Mississippi (Cochran) .... Chris McDaniel
Texas (Cornyn) .... Erick Wyatt
and on and on ...
Listen pal
I’ll be damned if I EVER am bamboozeled in to voting for an a hole like McLame again.
And as for these rino’s being foisted on us year after year that too has got to stop.
The frettin has just begun ..
Just once I would like to see real analysis of the tea party candidate...but instead we get hyperbole which I think most people sense is fear from the libs...because it is!
Examples please!
Tough choices then.
dean is backed by roy moore. byrne is backed by rove and the rep e types. doesnt seem to be a difficult decision.
A switch to the Republican Party in 1984 would been a switch of conviction. Anything 1994 or later looks like political expediency.
The Big business Roundtable, the national Chamber of Commerce, and all the other amnesty supporting big business interests are lining up against Dean Young, and pouring money into his opponent’s campaign coiffeurs. That tells me all I need to know!

Considering the area of Alabama that Bryne resides, with the Republican party being ascendent, this was a party switch of political expediency. Byrne will bend with the wind (and, most importantly, with the desires of the inside-the-beltway establishment).
Dean Young on the other hand is the real deal—a true conservative and man of conviction. He’ll stand with his conservative constituents. I hope Bryne prevails in this special election runoff and that anyone in a position to support him in any way does so.
The fact that one candidate uses “Tea Party” as an epithet is all I need to see.
Once upon a time the South was solid Democrat (AKA Dixiecrats). Over a period of time most of those switched to the Republican party after the Dems. were taken over by the Liberals. Ronald Reagan once was a Democrat.
