A floating island of debris the size of Texas has been crossing the vast Pacific Ocean to the western shores of the Americas since a devastating tsunami inundated Japan in 2011, says a new study.
Five million tons of wreckage - the remains of homes, boats, and other remnants of shattered lives in eastern Japan - were swallowed by the ocean that day in March, and more than one million tons of flotsam continues to head towards the west coast of the US.....
While the first documented debris from the tragedy has already been found in California, scientists fear these new findings mean there could be a lot more to come and it might arrive all at once.
Some of the more mobile items have been documented as washing up on the coast of California as early as 2011. In April, a 20ft boat ran aground at Crescent City, California. It was formally identified as a boat that belonged to the marine sciences program at Takata High School in the city of Rikuzentakata.
In all, 27 items from among more than 1,600 reports of debris have been firmly traced back to the tsunami, NOAA spokeswoman Keeley Belva said. The confirmed items include a small boat found in Hawaii waters, large docks that have washed ashore in Washington state and Oregon, and a motorcycle that washed ashore off the coast of British Columbia.
A soccer ball found on an Alaska island with a student's name on it was also traced to the city of Rikuzentakata. But distinguishing everyday trash from tsunami debris has proven difficult in most other cases......

Your post is beyond repugnant and you and ilk like you don’t speak for, nor do you represent me.
I never knew motorcycles could float.
Why didn’t anyone take the time to get rid of this mess? A cargo ship can go out and scoop this up can’t it?
..... Time to head out to salvage those floating jewelry boxes and goodies to help fund my new health insurance premiums.
Is that THE ONE paddling around in his own lies?
Need to figure out how to divert and deposit in the Potomac in D.C;
Sounds like it would take about 20 to 50 thousand cargo loads. Use huge nets to haul it back to Japan?
(Wild arse guess)
If all this stuff floats its way to the shore of Baja the debris will be turned into the next Baja Mexican shanty town known as East Fukushima.
“So, what have we got? Probably a bit of plastic every mile or so.”
Reports from planes flying over the debris field are a leetle worse than a bit of plastic. This is going to be a natural disaster of its own when it hits the left coast.
I feel bad for the Marine life that will get sick and die from this. Very sad. Too bad it can’t be directed into DC.
Not so.
1.) Plastic density is less than salt water density.
2.) The mega eddy in the North Pacific Ocean known as the Kiroshiro, is renowned for keeping floating debris together for a long time. Remember the shipload of lost tennis shoes, back in the day?
3.) Now for the bad news: Some of the debris is radioactive - - -
Cheer up. The radioactive fish will be consumed by Democrats in California, Oregon, and Washington.
Cesium takes a looooooong time to achieve a half-life.
Has anyone contacted Al Gore?
LOL
A motorcycle!!!???? How could a motorcycle float all the way to British Columbia from Japan. Dang.
I sincerely hope you are right.
