The provision in the law was the manifestation of the assurance that if you have a plan you want to keep, you can keep it. Insurance companies that chose to strip away benefits from existing plans in the interim, that canceled existing plans in the interim, they took away that grandfathering opportunity. And thats a reality.
White House spokesman Jay Carney, daily press briefing, Nov. 5, 2013
In defending President Obamas now-discredited pledge that if you like your health-care plan, youll be able to keep it, the White House has repeatedly tried to blame insurance companies.
White House spokesman Jay Carneys statement above, accusing insurance companies of stripping away benefits, is typical. Columnists supportive of the White House have piled on, arguing that insurance companies should be blamed.
Meanwhile, Obama, in trying to tweak his original pledge, added this caveat earlier this week: If you had or have one of these plans before the Affordable Care Act came into law and you really like that plan, what we said was, you could keep it if hasnt changed since the laws passed. Youre grandfathered in.
But theres an interesting wrinkle to this story that few appeared to have understood. The main culprit is not whether or not the insurance industry has changed a plan that ran afoul of the administrations regulations but the laws effective date. Lets explain. . .

Just ask Hussein and he will tell you: liberty and free enterprise are part of the “wrong side of history.”
Blame insurance companies even though it was the Kenyan who made those policies illegal. This is like making it illegal to sell car insurance then blaming car insurance companies for not selling car insurance. Isn’t it amazing how quiet the Repubs are in all this?
The liberals are now saying that many people had “crappy” insurance plans; that they were sub-standard, and that they will be so much better off with the new Obamacare plans.
I can’t believe how liberals spin things. And with the media being the way they are, liberals can get away with messages like this, which conservatives would never be allowed to do.
Look, Obama cant force the insurance companies to offer those pas policies with no changes forever, he cant force them to offer policies, even if that was his often repeated promise.
Its those darn companies faults for making changes to them.
Single payer would fix this, medicare works great.
Just print lots of $$$ like we do with medicare and problem solved.
They are pissing down our leg and telling us it is raining.
As someone on another thread said -
just go ask your favorite liberal what they’re going to do with the extra $2500 that obamacare is saving them.
It has become the pattern of obummer. It’s never his fault. He can’t be criticized. The next iteration will be that the failure was racist.
If your key defense tactic earns you 3 Pinnochios from the WaPo, you’re toast.
I've seen a lot of Repubs speaking out about this.
