Three Queens-bred heroes thwarted a rape in Flushing last week by chasing, catching and sitting on the attacker until cops arrived.
Verizon technicians Michael Popowich, Anthony Howley and John Gilday were finishing up a job at 150-24 Northern Boulevard on October 30 when they saw a man lurking across the street around noon.
They said the alleged assailant, identified by police as 53-year-old Young Song, ran up to a woman who was leaving a corner café and put his hand on her waist.

What is it with guys in their 50’s doing weird things? Has it always been so and I just haven’t noticed? Why, as I read the story am I surprised the perp isn’t a generation younger?

Will Verizon fire them?
That’s my question too.
But the rapist sounds Chinese, not black, so they may be ok.

Verizon will be sending her a bill, along with an offer of upgraded rape protection for 12 months with a 2 year contract.

“Will Verizon fire them?”
30 years ago that question would have been absurd.

Being taken down and sat on by these three grinning defensive tackles must have taken some step out of his Song.

If Verizon dares to, they ought to be made to do two things:
- Rehire them at double their salary.
- Get rid of that abominable name Verizon and call themselves Bell GTE (their names prior to merging) or something with the word Bell in it (i.e. as distinct from AT&T).

Lou, I have no idea why you would ask that, but I am a 30 year Verizon employee and I can tell you that the story appeared on the front page of our internal Intranet Website and other corporate magazines with praise and congratulations from executives on down.

There are probably over a hundred companies that eventually merged into Verizon. The outside plant these three heros work on was more than likely originally New York Telephone Company.
