China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam in line for seats on UN Human Rights Council

UNITED NATIONS – China, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam are among the nations running unopposed for seats on the Human Rights Council, the U.N.'s highest rights watchdog body, a prospect that has upset independent human rights groups.

The General Assembly on Tuesday will elect 14 new members to the 47-seat, Geneva-based council, which can shine a spotlight of publicity and censure on rights abuses by adopting resolutions — when it chooses to do so. It also has dozens of special monitors watching problem countries and major issues ranging from executions to drone strikes.

New York-based Human Rights Watch pointed out that five of the candidates — China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Algeria — have refused to let independent U.N. human rights monitors visit to investigate alleged abuses.

"Countries that haven't allowed U.N. experts appointed by the council to visit have a lot of explaining to do," said Peggy Hicks, global advocacy director at Human Rights Watch. "It's like hiring someone, then not allowing them to enter the office."

Seats on the council are allotted to regions, and countries from those regions select candidates for those seats. Sometimes the elections are contested and sometimes not. All 193 members of the General Assembly can vote on Tuesday.

The Asian group has unopposed candidates for its four seats: China, the Maldives, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam.

Saudi Arabia had been expected to run into trouble in the General Assembly vote after it won and then a day later rejected a seat on the Security Council for 2014-2015, an unprecedented move. The kingdom was apparently piqued over policy differences with the United States on Mideast issues, including how Washington has handled the Egypt and Syria crises, and warming ties between the U.S. and Iran, the Saudis' regional foe.

"UN Watch and other groups have also criticized the Human Rights Council for its preoccupation with reports and resolutions criticizing Israel over the Palestinian issue. By contrast, Neuer said that the council has never adopted a resolution critical of Russia, China, or Saudi Arabia."

"The United States is among the current members of the council, with a term set to expire in 2015."

The USA boycotted this abomination under Bush, at least. Obama making us join speaks to his agenda.

Oh, the AP was all for Russia when Russia was communist and sending people off to die in the gulags. Now, the Russians don’t bend over and kiss the homosexuals asses, and the AP turns on them faster than a scared gerbil.

North Korea's also starved their own people to death so their ‘sh*t for brains’ leaders can have more luxuries.

That certainly makes them scummy enough for a UN Human Rights Council...

Saudi Arabia - Human Rights Council? I guess they gave women the right to drive automobiles. Oh, not yet? I guess women aren’t consider full humans in Saudi Arabia, but then again, non-muslims are considered even more non-human there.

No, Peggy, they won't. They'll tell you to shove your demands up your keister, but will have the imprimatur of the UNHRC behind their refusals. And when they condemn Israel yet again, Human Rights Watch will be backing them 100%.
