Afghan national security forces near the border with Pakistan recently intercepted one of the largest truck bombs ever built, a massive "vehicle-borne improvised explosive device," or VBIED, packed with some 61,500 pounds of explosives.
***snip*** An ABC News investigation, which aired on "World News with Diane Sawyer" this week, showed that lawmakers have tried to stop the U.S. Army from giving logistics contracts to companies linked to Afghan insurgents including the deadly network run by Jalaluddin Haqqani and his son Siraj

61,500 lbs? That would leave a crater.
Big crater. Yahoo has a more informed article but it was quoting ABC so I went there.
That IS HUGH!!!
DHS would have a lot of ‘splainin’ if God forbid the homeland had another blast like Oklahoma City
Drive that sucker to the Mecca, park it, and set that baby off.
Considering it’s in Afghanistan, that’s not a bad thing.
It would give people something to look at.
After further review and looking at the pic.. It wasn’t quite what I was expecting.. They look like they just tossed stuff in and on top until it filled the canvas covered enclosure.. Imaginative? No. Stinky? Probably
I was more envisioning Oprah and a load of her audience supporters,, 30 tons worth or so. :-o
What, those sexy goats aren't enough for you to look at?
Beat me to announcing the obvious solution.
You know what I like.
Much like liberals in the United States who have also been using our own money to fight us for decades.
Wasn't an IED something were you took a dud artillery shell, replaced the trigger with the receiver from a garage door opener and used that as a roadside bomb? At over 30 tons it doesn't sound the slightest bit "improvised".
That’ll buff right out...
Throwing the BS flag on the story after checking the pic. That’s not a truck that could haul 30+ tons of anything anyplace. Looks like they intercepted a laundry truck. Whatever is in those bags is dry, meaning it’s not an ANFO bomb. Maybe Paki is hauling fertlizer but it’s not yet assembled into something that would do anything more than burn——and stink. Reporting this as a “big bomb” is someone trying to boost somebody’s creds, probly himself.——there it goes wwwhhhheeeee.
“According to Afghan sources, the driver was a Pakistani who set off a grenade in the cab of the truck. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he detonated a suicide vest and killed himself, officials said.”
I’m guessing they just might want to review their protocals for frisking them for weapons and explosive vests.
“No - my me-ma make vest for me, very precious.”
> According to Afghan sources, the driver was a Pakistani who set off a grenade in the cab of the truck. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he detonated a suicide vest and killed himself, officials said.
WTF? Sets of a grenade in the cab, survives it and then sets of his suicide vest at the hospital! Some real morons running the show there.
Are you suggesting blowing up the black vagina rock ?
I was thinking it would have been their IED supply truck.
I guess smoking IS permitted. Steadies the nerves.
Seen it multiple times, a masterpiece!
A great sit on the edge of your seat film.
What kind of truck can carry 61,500lbs?
I drive a fairly large concrete mixer that has a nominal max payload of 11 cubic yards that is roughly 44,000 lbs.
Anything heavier requires additional axles, they have mixers that are on trailers but they are very very large and are rarely used in most cities.
About the only way to get that kind of weight on a truck is a set of turnpike doubles. Or a multiple axle lowboy trailer.
I’ve lived in Brooklyn most of my life, I unfortunately have no idea what you’re talking about.
Wheeled Tank transporters have been around for a long time. the WWII medium tank was the Sherman weighing 34 tons or 68,000 pounds. They were hauled on multiple axled trailers for long distances to save wear on the tank’s tracks and suspension. Newer transporters routinely haul tanks weighing 52 tons and more. Check out this link
I think you are right. That truck looks like it might haul a load of rental uniforms back to the laundry facility but even that would be a struggle. Thirty tons would seem to be out of the question.
On dirt and sand roads yet....That sucker would sink plumb up to his eyeballs.!!
so judging by the truck, less the wood, could you guestimate the actual load of fertilizer? Either way, less IEDs.
Strictly by eyeball, I’m becoming convinced that that 61,500 number is in GRAMS. Which would yield about 1600 pounds...
Oh, well. Most of the MSM types I’ve seen probably couldn’t tell the diff between a gram and a ton unless it landed on their head.
But then, I’ve also never known the media to let the facts get in the way of a good storyline, even if they had to FUBAR the Acceleration of Gravity and every system of weights and measures known to mankind to get there.
“lawmakers have tried to stop the U.S. Army from giving logistics contracts to companies linked to Afghan insurgents”
Good God,, I had no idea we were fighting so brutally. This is total war! We are seriously considering not hiring the enemy to run our logistics? Whats next, nuclear attack?
It’s part of Petraeus’ COIN strategy or the business ROE. Instead of waiting till after the war to rebuild, they fund the enemy during the war to “Influence insurgent-minded individuals to adopt a neutral disposition.”
How’s that working out for you, Mr. Petraeus?
One thing I have to say about the Taliban, they use their money to achieve their goals, as opposed to those who get handouts in the United States.
