Town hall meeting offers education, guidance on new insurance law ___ Amid lagging enrollment and continuing problems with the rollout of the Affordable Care Act, local and federal officials urged Houston residents Saturday to sign up for health insurance under the new law.

Hundreds attended a town hall meeting Saturday morning at the George R. Brown Convention Center downtown to learn more about their coverage options under so-called Obamacare, attempt to sign up for insurance plans and receive free health screenings.

"We need to know what is best for us and what they can give to us," said Mirna Balderas, who attended with her husband, Dario.

The turnout to the bilingual event, organized and hosted by Houston Spanish language television and radio stations, was overwhelmingly Hispanic.

Texas Medicaid: We’ll never beat California, but if we try enough, we might beat NY for 2nd place.

Houstonians urged to enroll in Obamacare

I don't know the details but wasn't Houston the city that opted out of Social Security when an opportunity arose. How did that work out for Houston? Will Houston’s wisdom hold?

I’m starting to see a potential for an exploding cigar with the commie libs pushing their ObamaCrap scam. The freeloaders and those needing subsidies will go and sign up. Those who are going to need to sign up for higher premiums and deductibles will take a pass. ObamaCrap is going to implode AND THAT’S A GOOD THING. JMO.

It sounds like that woman and a bunch of others should have stayed home, under the radar-if an adult woman doesn’t know what is best for her, she is really stupid-and she doesn’t realize the only thing “they” are going to give her is very likely the first bill for insurance she has ever had to pay...

“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can get from your country”.

This is the Democrat’s secret weapon, and we had better take it seriously. They are scrambling like hell to get as many voters signed up on free Obamacare plans or Medicaid.

The 2014 elections will be a contest between how many productive citizens are mad enough to finally vote in their own best interests versus how many new Free-Government-Sh*t-Gravy-Train voters can be created by then.

Yeah! Hurry up and enroll. Barry needs you to pay higher premiums and deductibles to pull the ‘RATS’ chestnuts out of the fire. Somebody has to pay for the subsidized freeloaders! LOL! Go for it!

Those are the operative words: what they can “give to us”, instead of “what is available to buy”.

Since Hussein raised the income qualification for Medicaid, likely many or most or all will qualify for Medicaid and pay nothing - until they die, then their assets, especially the house if they own one, is taken by the government to help “repay” federal money spent on them. I really doubt they are going to be told that part of the Medicaid law/rules. They will sign up for Medicaid for free healthcare, wow, what a bargain - they will “give it to us”, just like the woman said at the top of this post. They can leave nothing to their children, as it will all be taken by the govn. when they die.

If one spouse dies on Medicaid and the other spouse is still living in the house, the spouse can remain until he/she dies, then the house goes to the govn. to be sold.

I will tell you something - any connection you have to this Hussein federal govn. is a danger to take everything you have and stop you from living as you have been. Never in my long lifetime have I seen a danger such as this. Your healthcare (Health and Human Services), your taxes (IRS), your transportation FTA (Federal Transportation Agency), your income if you are on it (Social Security), you cannot depend on these agencies anymore.

I just read in an Israeli newspaper that the Israeli Mossad (like our CIA), and Saudi Arabia have come together to plan attacking Iran if an agreement isn't reached in the meeting going on right now between the US, Iran and others. An agreement isn't going to happen - Iran will never give up their plan for a nuclear weapon. The Saudis have already agreed to let Israeli planes go over their country in their attack on Iran. I believe an attack will come before this year is over.

All of us need to prepare to take care of ourselves and forget thoughts of FEMA saving us from disaster - each of us is one of over 300 million souls and FEMA doesn't know you or me but we are in a group of conservatives and considered by FEMA to be possible domestic terrorists by their own writings.

I think I will have an adult beverage now.

My understanding of the new Medicaid eligibility requirements is that there is NO ASSET TEST. So your estate won’t loose your home(s) when you die.

Can anyone confirm this?

Under the new relaxed eligibility requirements, all they look at is your income, not assets. You can own even several homes including vacation homes, vehicles, etc. As long as your income is below a certain number, you can qualify for Medicaid.

That means millions more will qualify for Medicaid. However, where is the part that says they won’t take your house and other assets when you die to re-pay what they spent on you? They are not going to spend millions and not have that “catch 22” that they can’t take your house and other assets.

I would have to see it in writing from them that they won’t take your assets and then I wouldn’t believe them - you can keep your healthcare if you like it - that was a lie and they WILL come after your assets after you die if you are on Medicaid, just like they do now.

You might be right. I have been trying to find out information about this for some time. It’s not clear whether people who are forced to go on Medicaid under Obamacare will be included in the Estate Recovery programs of traditional Medicaid.

This is another of those “we have to pass it to see what’s in it” things that is very hard even after passage to see what’s in it and hard to get straight answers from ‘navigators’ about (since most of them do not know the intricacies of the law).

You used the word “forced” and that is wrong in Hussein's world. These people are not “forced” into Medicaid. They could do nothing and pay the fine (err, tax), or they could buy a policy - you see what I mean? They will “volunteer” to take Medicaid and that's free medical care and Hussein WILL take their assets when they die just like they do now with people on Medicaid. They aren't going to get free medical care the rest of their lives and get out of this world FREE.

Until we get Hussein out of power and a conservative in power, we will keep becoming more like serfs that are disposable. We are turning into Soylent Green.

Texas didn’t accept money from the federal govn. to expand Medicaid - we turned that down.
